📣 Prevention Works!
As Substance Use Prevention Month comes to a close, let’s end with an amazing reminder that PREVENTION WORKS! Nationwide data shows that underage drinking rates have steadily declined since the early 2000s. The percentage of 12th graders reporting alcohol use at least once in their lives dropped from 82% in 1997 to just 59% in 2019—a remarkable 28% decline! 📉
Check out these snapshots from the CHS Wellness Survey, showcasing how prevention efforts have positively impacted Cohasset since 2017.
Together, we can continue to promote healthy choices and keep our youth safe! 💪❤️

Substance Use Prevention Month: Parental Influence 👪
12.7% of CHS students report that some drinking with friends is allowed if a parent is present and 17.4% say drinking is allowed without a parent present as long as the student does not drive afterwards.
Adults who provide alcohol to minors or turn a blind to underage drinking are breaking the law and putting our young people, and our entire community, at significant risk! It’s not enough to take their keys!
Parental attitudes and behaviors play a crucial role in shaping teens’ views on alcohol. As a parent, you have the power to help your child make safe choices regarding underage drinking. So how can you use your influence for good?
💬 Start the Conversation: Talk openly with your child about the risks of alcohol, including its impact on health and safety.
🚷 Set Clear Rules: Establish firm expectations regarding alcohol use and explain the reasons behind them.
⚖️ Understand the Social Host Law: In Massachusetts, adults can be held legally responsible for providing alcohol to minors, even in your own home. Hosting underage drinking can lead to serious legal consequences!
🗣️ Talk to Other Parents: Your child has the right to be safe at other people’s homes. Be proactive and reach out to other parents before sending your child there. Make sure they understand your expectations about alcohol safety.
🏡 Join the Our Safe Home Directory: Show your commitment to providing safe, substance-free spaces for youth in Cohasset by joining the Our Safe Home Directory! Visit www.safeharborcohasset.org/oursafehome to learn more and sign up today.
By being proactive and involved, you can help reduce the risk of underage drinking in your community. Let’s work together to keep our kids safe! 💪❤️
Just a few more days to cast your votes for the Pumpkin Decorating Contest! 🎃

Voting closes 10/29. Winners announced 10/31.
🚨 Substance Use Prevention Month 🤝 Halloween Safety for Teens 🎃
This Halloween, let’s keep the celebration safe for everyone! According to the 2023 CHS Wellness Survey, 10% of students reported being in a car with someone who had been drinking in the past month. Shockingly, about 45% of fatalities in car crashes involving a drinking driver under 21 are innocent passengers or pedestrians.
Underage drunk driving affects our entire community, and we all have a role to play! This Halloween, whether you are a student, parent/caregiver, or Cohasset community member remember to:
👻 Plan Ahead: Adults, if you’re going out, arrange for a safe ride home—designate a sober driver or use rideshare services. Parents & caregivers, help your child make a safe plan. Know where they will be at all times and check in regularly.
🧙♀️ Be Aware: Watch for pedestrians while driving, especially with excited trick-or-treaters around.
🕷️ Talk About It: Discuss the dangers of underage drinking with your child and/or other young people in your life. Help them find fun, alcohol-free alternatives to celebrate!
Let’s create a community where young people can thrive without the risks of drinking. Together, we can make this Halloween safe and enjoyable for all! 🎉

🚨 Substance Use Prevention Month: Know the Facts about Binge Drinking🚨
At CHS, only 20% of students reported drinking in the last month, but 12% of that group engaged in binge drinking. This behavior poses serious risks:
🔹 Brain Development: Alcohol disrupts critical brain growth, affecting memory and impulse control.
🔹 Blackouts: 1 in 5 older teens who drink experience blackouts.
🔹 Risky Behavior: Binge drinking increases the likelihood of dangerous actions like unprotected s*x and impaired driving.
🔹 Mental Health: Binge drinking is linked to anxiety and depression.
🔹 Addiction: Early alcohol use raises the risk of future addiction.
🔹 Accidents: Impaired coordination leads to a higher chance of injuries.
🔹 Legal Issues: Underage drinking can result in fines and school repercussions.
🔹 Social Impact: It can damage relationships with peers and family.
Promoting awareness is essential for prevention. Last week, we shared tips for discussing alcohol safety with your child. Equip them with the knowledge about the risks of underage drinking and empower them to make safe choices! 💪🍎

🗣️ Substance Use Prevention Month: Tips for Talking With Your Child about Alcohol
Did you know that 60% of CHS students have never had a conversation with their parents/caregivers about alcohol?
Talking to your child about alcohol is essential for their safety. Even if you don’t allow drinking in your home, your child may have to navigate tricky situations at friend’s houses or parties. Make sure your child knows they can come to you with questions and concerns.
Here are key tips from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to help guide your conversation with your kids:
🔹Start Early: Begin discussions about alcohol before your child is exposed to it, and continue the dialogue as they grow.
🔹Be Honest: Share your views on alcohol honestly, discussing both the risks and the reasons behind your stance.
🔹Encourage Questions: Let your child know it’s okay to ask questions. This fosters a trusting environment.
🔹Discuss Peer Pressure: Help them identify and practice ways to resist peer pressure when it comes to drinking.
🔹Set Clear Expectations: Make your rules about alcohol use clear and explain the reasons behind them.
🔹Be a Role Model: Demonstrate responsible drinking behavior, if you choose to drink, and highlight the importance of moderation.
Open conversations can empower your child to make safe choices. Let’s equip them for a healthy future! 💪❤️

Safe Harbor Youth Ambassadors Pumpkin Decorating Contest - Cohasset Anchor October 10, 2024 Submitted by Safe Harbor Cohasset
October is Substance Use Awareness Month, and we want you to know the facts!
Alcohol continues to be the most widely used substance of abuse among youth across the nation and here in Cohasset. As they grow older, the chance that young people will use alcohol grows. Approximately 10% of 12-year-olds nationwide say they have used alcohol at least once. By age 13, that number doubles. And by age 15, approximately 50% have had at least one drink.
Here in Cohasset, 27% of CHS students who reported drinking said they started between the ages of 13 and 15. Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who wait until 21. Did you know that alcohol dependence rates are highest among 18-20-year-olds? And they’re not even old enough to drink legally.
Underage drinking contributes to a wide range of costly health and social problems, including su***de, death from motor vehicle crashes, interpersonal violence (such as homicides, assaults, and rapes), unintentional injuries (such as burns, falls, and drownings), brain impairment, alcohol dependence, risky s*xual activity, academic problems, and alcohol and drug poisoning.

Did you know these stats?
-27% of Cohasset High students who have drank alcohol began drinking between age 13 and 15. Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21.
-60% of Cohasset High students said they have not had a discussion with their parent or caregiver about drinking expectations.
-12.5% of Cohasset High students said some drinking with friends is allowed if a parent is present and 17.4% said drinking is allowed without a parent present as long as the student does not drive afterwards.
Help us change these statistics by taking the pledge as a Safe Home or Safe Business, and joining the Our Safe Home Directory! The Directory is a network of youth, parents, and local merchants who are committed to creating safe spaces for young people in Cohasset.
So what exactly does this commitment look like?
- Parents pledge their commitment in providing a fun, safe, and substance-free environment for their children and peers.
- Merchants pledge to comply by following the law and regulations, to not sell alcohol to young people under 21 years old.
- You do not have to have school age kids to participate, it’s simply a message of support.
- This is not a pledge for adults to not have alcohol in the home-it’s a pledge to not provide to minors.
- You don’t have to share more than your name if you don’t want to, to participate.
Visit www.safeharborcohaset.org/oursafehome to take the pledge and join the directory today!
