✨We are going to barely scrape the surface of this topic because it's so in depth.
👅Tongue ties have become a bit of a buzz word and something that everyone is worried about. The awareness is great! We need to make sure that ties are not just being clipped because they are present. It's important to look at the FUNCTION, meaning how well the baby is feeding.🍼
👶If baby is struggling in any way on breast or bottle, or it is painful to nurse, reach out to a speech-language pathologist for a feeding evaluation to look at the child and feeding session holistically to determine best next steps.

Screen time📱💻🖥 This can be demonized (and for good reason); however, we understand that sometimes it's necessary. Even if kids are watching "educational" shows, there is a lot of research that shows the transfer of information from a screen to the real world is limited. It's best to avoid screen time as much as possible. Let your kids learn the skills of entertaining themselves, problem solving, and imaginary play, just to name a few... all things learned through play and not a screen. 🥁🧩🚗
✨When screen time is necessary, choose high quality options. Check out the last slide for why these are considered "high quality".
✨My final thought: please please avoid Cocomelon! Think about how overstimulated you feel while watching the vibrant colors and quick transitions. This is so much more overstimulating for children.
What does a speech or language evaluation look like? 🗣
This will vary quite a bit depending on your child's age. For any age, and for both speech and language evaluations, we will include some play and conversation. We will also try to complete formal assessment using a standardized test if appropriate. As always, there is plenty of time for questions and discussing next steps!

What does an evaluation look like for a child who's having trouble with solids?🍓🥦
Looking in the child's mouth is important to look at all oral structures. We will observe a child eating, offering supports when needed, trialing different strategies, and plenty of time for questions!

What does a bottle or breastfeeding evaluation look like?🍼
Bottle evaluation specifically may include trialing different bottles. Both types of evaluations will include looking inside of baby's mouth and may include positioning changes, external supports, and plenty of time for questions!

There is so much exposure to foods before eating. At Sunrise, we promote a combination of baby-led weaning approach and purees. The great thing about the baby-led weaning approach is how much interaction a child gets with foods prior to the chewing and swallowing. Where is your child falling on the hierarchy? I know for me, olives are something I can't get beyond touch. 🫒

1. Kids enjoy being silly! Make silly noises, use inflection in your voice. This is more likely to promote imitation than monotonous words.
2. Keep it simple. If kids are bombarded with long sentences, it may be too much for them to break down and understand.
3. Follow their lead in play, and use lots of narration. Kids like to feel a sense of control, and play is an area where we can allow that safely.
4. Along the same lines as #1, environmental noises like vehicle and animal sounds are fun to say! Oftentimes, they are simpler sound combinations as well, which make them easier to imitate.
5. Be creative! You don't need to create the best sensory bin or homemade toddler activity ever, but be creative in your communication and play. Allow for imagination to flourish.
6. We want to MODEL, MODEL, MODEL. Take off the demand that questions place, and just model the language you want to see.

Does your child stutter? A lot of children do when they are going through a "language explosion" or learning lots of new words and forming bigger sentences. This is often typical and will go away over time. If the stuttering is negatively impacting their daily life or is lasting longer than seems normal, reach out to a speech-language pathologist☀
There are a few universal precautions you can take to decrease reflux in infants👶
If difficulties continue, it would be a good idea to talk to your pediatrician and get a feeding evaluation to determine best next steps.
My favorite phrase to use with picky eaters. "I wonder if it's crunchy/sweet/soft/juicy"...any descriptive word you can think of! This is a much better way of getting a child interested in food than simply saying, "It's good. You'll like it". We try to stay away from words such as YUMMY, YUCKY, GOOD, BAD when talking about foods. We want to allow kids to be curious about foods and form their own opinions🍽
✨Have you ever wondered what the difference is? A child can benefit from both school and private speech therapy. Also, if your child didn't qualify for school speech therapy but you still have concerns, they could possibly qualify for private speech therapy.
Happy Father's Day to all the amazing dads! ☀
It's the daily practice and progress that makes a big difference. That's why at Sunrise, we encourage parents to be as active of participants as possible in their child's speech therapy. Yes, we help kids, but we really help families and look at the child's success as a team effort. We place an emphasis on empowering parents to feel confident in their ability to help their child during all of the time we are not☀
🍼Paced bottle feeding is one of the best things you can do when you have a newborn, and/or when breastfeeding. In typical feeding, depending on the ni**le level, milk is always readily available, and baby does not have to do much. They may actually be getting too much milk too quickly. Pacing them allows time to coordinate the crucial suck-swallow-breathe pattern. This can also be helpful for combination breast/bottle feeders, as it is more similar to the work needed to express milk from the breast.✨

🗣 These are the sounds we expect children to have at different ages. Notice how many sounds are acquired between 2-3 years! If you are worried that you child is not using these sounds, an evaluation may be appropriate.

🍓 Feeding Milestones:
This age is so much fun! Chewing skills are developing, they are showing more independence with feeding (and probably showing that independence in their preferences too), and they can eat a wider variety of foods.
You can start to introduce slightly harder textures (think strawberries, still easily mashable) and mixed textures (think stews or spaghetti with ground meat).
There's still lots to keep in mind at this age. We're here to help! ☀️

🍌 Feeding Milestones:
This is the fun, yet sometimes overwhelming, stage. You're starting to offer more foods. We highly recommend taking a combination approach between baby-led weaning and purees.
Purees have been somewhat demonized lately. I don't know about you, but I love my yogurt and applesauce! 🥄 We all eat purees! Just like it's important for us as adults to eat a variety of flavors and textures, the same goes for our little ones.
Keep these skills in mind when choosing which foods to introduce. Notice the only "chewing" a baby this age is doing is a munching pattern. Great for mushing very soft foods (think cooked sweet potatoes), but not great for chewing up harder foods (think apples).
If this feels overwhelming, Sunrise offers consultations to help parents get started with this introduction to solids☀️
