Sweet Selma Farms
Sweet Selma Farms is an urban farm lovingly named for Selma Katzenstein, a farmer who inspired many with her wit, cooking and courage.
We grow fruits, nuts and herbs and then make yummy stuff for The Irwin Street Market.

This felt really good...
It's been a very long time since we've posted here. I hope all who see this are happy and well. As you may know we are, quietly, in addition to many other things, a rescue for farm birds (chickens, ducks, turkeys, and the occasional peacock) in the Metro Atlanta community. From time to time we receive birds that were more than the owners could handle. Our flock ebbs and flows but our goal is to give each bird a safe place to live out their days...with no fear of being processed if/when they stop laying eggs.
Today, we had the opportunity to do things in reverse. A member of the Atlanta Backyard Chickens group we help moderate came and took three chickens to replace the three that were stolen from her backyard a few weeks ago.
It feels so good to give these girls a new home where we know they will be loved. While we can't take any more roosters, if you know of anyone who needs to rehome their hens please let us know and we'll do our best to help.

Valentine's Day Special!!! Sweet Selma Farms in College Park is actively searching for a mate for our feathered (duck) friend, Paul. He recently lost his girlfriend Julia to mean, old and ugly predators. He is sad but finally ready to meet someone new. His requirements on "Ducks Match" are that she must enjoy bathing in public, special attention from her boyfriend and a strong sense of community involvement. He would love for her to have a cute waddle but it isnt necessarily a deal breaker. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
The bees found a fantastic water source at the crawfish pond at Sweet Selma Farms.
Fall planting is happening and we are incredibly excited about it. Blake Sumner "Young Urban Farmer" is making it happen. Video courtesy of Jamia Sims.
Got Shade?? More shade cloth up and doing its job protecting logs.

What We Don't Think About When Buying A Carton Of Eggs
I wish our chickens could read. They don't know how good they have it...and they can count on their freedom and being "sperlt" forever.

Look at Nanny Mavis and her charges, now! This lady was subjected to a very real and very disturbing pecking order and we separated her from the flock (her own sisters). She had few front feathers and fewer rear feathers when we moved her.
For two weeks we kept her in isolation just in case she was, in fact, ill, and then, when we saw that she was healthy, we added four teenage girls for her to tend as she healed. Next we added a small Silkie rooster named Chidney and after a few days of nervous circling and pecking...we've created a new family and Nanny Mavis is radiant (and fully feathered)!
