Highlighting Trails to celebrate 2024 National Trails Day® - June 1st

Bear Creek Regional Trail - Little Park to Corwina Park - located along the Lariat Loop National Scenic & Historic Byway.

Little Park serves as the first trailhead on the Bear Creek Trail which connects Lair O' the Bear, Corwina, O'Fallon and Pence Parks. Little Park's 400-acres were acquired by the City of Denver in 1917 and are characterized by steep canyons and ridges covered with Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir forests. Little Park was among Denver's first 10 mountain parks. It sits just outside of Idledale and is home to a unique octagonal-roofed well house built in 1919. "Dinosaur Ridge, the world-renowned dinosaur track site just 30 minutes from Denver, provides a pathway straight to a local legacy. Since it opened in 1989, visitors have been able to follow in the footsteps dinosaurs left behind along what was once the muddy shore of an ancient seaway known as the 'Dinosaur Freeway.' Now, they can also trace the unique impact left behind by local paleoichnologist and co-founder of Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, the late Dr. Martin Lockley." Join us this Tuesday, February 6, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., for a free program, "Galloping Gourmet: Dining with Buffalo Bill," at the Highland Recreation Center, 2880 Osceola St, Denver.

Author and historian Steve Friesen explores the evolving role of eating and drinking in Buffalo Bill's life. On the American Plains, Cody ate simple foods such as cornbread, fried “yellow-legged” chicken, and hardtack. As Buffalo Bill’s fame increased, so did his desire and opportunities for fine dining. Attendees will enjoy tasty samples.

Bent’s Old Fort, located along the Santa Fe Trail, was founded in 1833 by brothers William and Charles Bent and their partner, Ceran St. Vrain. This reconstructed fort was a trading post strategically located between fur trappers in the Rockies, traders on their way to Santa Fe, and Cheyenne, Arapaho, Comanche, and Kiowa Indians who hunted in the area. Today, National Park Service rangers in period attire staff the fort and bring the 1840s to life for visitors.
