2023 in Review

This year saw great growth in Brazos WiFi’s fiber footprint. We have added 54 miles of fiber distribution making fiber service available to over 1100 rural and semi-rural households. We now have more than 166 miles of fiber covering much of Brazos, Robertson, and Leon counties.

We now have 18 fantastic employees dedicated to delivering internet to the over 4000 current Brazos WiFi customers. Our fiber construction crews did a great job of expanding our network despite the brutal summer heat this year.

Looking forward to 2024, we plan to push fiber internet further into our wireless footprints and bring even better service to our long-time customers in rural Brazos County.

This morning around 9:30AM Central time, the Amazon West datacenter started having trouble.

This is relevant because Amazon servers power many things on the internet besides just Amazon.com. For instance Twitch.tv (streaming) and Flowroute.com (telephones) are both hosted on AWS.

We expect Amazon will get this sorted out soon.

Who is Brazos WiFi? We provide rural and semi-rural areas with wireless and fiber internet services. Currently we service nearly 3000 households and are growing year after year.

Brazos WiFi is hiring 1 (or possibly 2 people to share this role) for a 4-8PM, Monday-Friday and 11-3 on Saturday CSR position. We don’t get a lot of calls or e-mails outside of our normal hours but as we have grown, we now need someone to catch those calls / emails.

-Answer inbound phone calls and assist current and/or new customers with technical and/or billing issues.
-Respond to inbound e-mails related to technical and/or billing issues.
-Occasionally provision equipment for the following day/week.
-Sweep / Vacuum once a week.
-Lock up at the end of the night.

John and Shannon made the impossible happen today. We have a client that requires pulse dialing so Scott got to make a call from 1970 over VoIP.

I want to publicly thank my employees for all the hard work they put in during the year.

Just yesterday, our underground fiber crew completed a 32,000ft project to extend fiber across Eastern Brazos County and bring true high-speed internet to those areas. This project took months and was delayed by holidays and severe weather but they stuck with it and did a great job.

I would be remiss not to mention the hard work that our wireless side of the business is putting in to enable us to build fiber-to-the-home. Thank you Timothy Loehr & Joshua Salazar for running all over God's green earth to install and repair our wireless clients.

Our office staff are the people that keep the bus rolling down the road. These folks get to chat with hundreds of people a day on the phone and do it with a smile on their face. Scott Sewell was our first hire and he has steadfastly helped me steer the ship all these years. Shannon Deskin and Kayla Michelle Martinez do a great job with answering all the questions we get on a daily basis.

Last, but not least, John Kelly joined us in January to help with the heavy lifting on the networking side as we continue to grow.

3 updates:

1. We are getting ice on the roads and I expect this will continue into Monday / Tuesday. This makes travel dangerous, as you already know.
This means that if we have a tower go offline due to power outage, it may be a bit before things are brought back online.
Ice buildup on antennas causes signal loss. This may negatively impact some of your speeds. Unfortunately, we have to just wait on the ice to melt before things return to normal.

2. Our office will be closed at least Monday and Tuesday.
We will continue to monitor voicemails and we have staff on call to answer phones from home if needed.

3. We are disabling the account suspension feature while our office is closed and people are home from work and school.
We will re-enable the suspension feature after travel is back to normal and the schools reopen.

The widespread fiber outage from 9:10 AM Wednesday morning continues.

The latest update is that the repairs are underway and expected to be completed by 3AM.

You do NOT need to manually power cycle your equipment to restore service. When the fiber is repaired, you should be back online.
