Dallas - Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue
The DFW Dachshund Rescue Foundation rehabilitates and re-homes abandoned, discarded, and surrendered dachshunds in the Dallas - Fort Worth area.
We are staffed solely by volunteers, and are supported by donations and adoption fees. The Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation is a well-established 501(c)3 organization with a history of providing dachshund related education and service to the DFW community. If you are looking to adopt or purchase a dachshund, have dachshund related training or behavior questions, or need to place your
Adopters! Take a look at our amazing raffle for tomorrow at the rescue reunion picnic! We are set up to take cash, checks, zelle or pay pal. Lots of neat items and this supports the work of DFW Dachshund Rescue!
We received a nice update from Apollo's adopters (he was adopted two years ago). They report that he loves to go on vacation with them, and recently enjoyed a trip to Santa Fe. He loves his daily walks and visits with the grandchildren. A happy life for Apollo! Reminds us how glad we are to help dogs like Apollo!
For our adopters coming to the DFW Dachshund Rescue Reunion Picnic this Sunday, we are having a costume contest for the dogs! A prize for "scariest" costume and for "best overall"! Be creative! Get your dog ready!
Meet Elsa, a 7-year-old female red smooth dachshund. Elsa is a friendly, energetic girl who needed quite a bit of of vet care, including spay surgery, dental cleaning, vaccines, and a removal of a growth from her eye area. She came through those procedures nicely, and once she was healed--we already had adopters on the approved waiting list who wanted a female dachshund.
Elsa has settled quickly into her new home, with two dachshund buddies (one of who came from this group a couple of years ago). She loves to play with her new canine friends, and enjoys walks in a nearby park. She has shown herself to be a happy, friendly girl and we are thrilled that she has a second chance at a happy life! Life long and prosper, Elsa!
It's fun to see pictures when a couple of our adopters get together! Here are Carson and Charlie--they came to rescue some years ago from the same situation. Both looking great and enjoying life!
Freya was a stray, impounded by an area animal control agency. No one came to claim her, and the shelter was incredibly full at the time so we were called for help. Luckily, Freya was basically healthy and only needed routine vet care. She was friendly, but uneducated about being a house dog...but was eager to learn and do the right thing. Former adopters were ready for a second dog, and wanted a dog that would do well with their 8 and 12 year old children---we thought Freya would fit the bill--and she did!
Freya loves her new home, going on walks and hanging out with her family. She is enrolled in obedience class and learning a lot of new things. Congratulations to Freya and her family! Live long and prosper!
Lars, a 4 year old black and tan smooth male dachshund, found a happy home with former adopters who were ready for a new dachshund companion. He loves his regular walks, and especially enjoys being a pampered only dog! Live long and prosper Lars!
Happy news this evening! Scout the puppy was adopted and here is his story:
Scout was purchased from a puppy mill that specialized in breeding dachshunds of unusual colors. (this is always a bad sign--good breeders breed for health and temperament). He was 8 weeks old when he was purchased and by 10 weeks of age, the owner was overwhelmed and called us for help. The breeder of the dog refused to take him back, so we accepted him into our program. Scout was a 10 week old isabella and tan dapple longhair dachshund puppy. He was in good health when he arrived, so he continued on with the routine puppy health care and also attended puppy obedience classes. He proved to be an incredibly sweet and smart little dog and we knew he would need a home with adopters who were prepared to spend lots of time with him and to attend further training classes to stimulate Scout's smart little brain. Long time dachshund owners knew we had Scout and inquired about applying to adopt him. They applied, and we knew this would be perfect home for him. He's settled in with his new family happily, and that includes another dachshund named Milo. We are thrilled for Scout and his new family! Live long and prosper!
We have had several people ask about "Lars". Lars is estimated to be about 4 years old (he was a stray impounded by an animal shelter so we don't have an exact birthday). We are happy to say that he has completed all his vet work and is now ready for a new home! If you are interested in applying, let us know. Lars is an energetic, playful dachshund and would do best with another small dog that likes to play. He can't be placed with a cat, so keep that in mind. (like many dachshunds he wants to hunt cats). He is an outgoing, friendly fellow! A really fun little dog!
We heard from the adopter of Emma and Dexter. Both dogs are doing well--Dexter loves to play ball and both dogs like to work on keeping their yard free of squirrels! So glad to get these updates from our wonderful adopters.
We have some very sad news. Gretchen, who was adopted recently, died after having a massive stroke. This was heartbreaking for her adopters and the rescue foster parents who loved him. Sometimes bad things happen unexpectedly and there just aren't explanations. Fly free Gretchen! We are sorry you did not get longer on this earth but you were loved all the days you did have.
A warning again: We had someone contact us today that had been scammed by one of the many "dachshund puppies for adoption" ads that appear on different pages. (We get a lot of these and monitor our page every day and report, block and delete every time--but they are relentless).
PLEASE DO NOT respond to any ads like that....these are criminals waiting to take your money and they are all over the internet. And tell other people not to respond either. If they stop getting responses we might have a chance to get rid of these criminals for once and for all.
Welcome to "Joker"; a 2-year-old red smooth male dachshund. He came to us after a family was overwhelmed with the care of a new baby and felt that re-homing was the best option for their dog. Joker has had overall good care, we are waiting for a heartworm test and blood work results before we place him in a foster home. Joker is a quiet, gentle dog who we think would enjoy a calm, laid-back home--possibly with the companionship of an older small dog.
Gretchen (8 year old red smooth female) came to us after her elderly owner died suddenly and extended family could not take this dog in. Former adopters were on our waiting list and were eager to have Gretchen. However she had major dental issues so had two procedures by Dr. Bonnie Bloom (dental specialist) and finally Gretchen is ready to go to her new home tomorrow! Her new family will be an excellent match for Gretchen and we are so happy for her!
When you are applying to a rescue group, you will be filling out an application--much like applying for a job. Be sure to answer all the questions; incomplete applications are not going to be approved. And most importantly, provide a way for us to respond to you about your application. Recently, we have had several instances where we did not hear back from applicants--this after emailing, sending a postal letter, leaving a phone message and texting. Then we were left an indignant message by the applicant saying they hadn't been contacted by the group. We explained all the ways we had tried to reach them and then were told a version of: "oh I don't read my emails, I don't answer phone calls or check voice mail or text messages from numbers I don't know."
When we reminded them that applying to a rescue group meant that they were pretty well guaranteed to receive a message in some format from someone they had not met previously and thus wouldn't be in their contacts.....there was silence and then "oh....that's right".
So if you apply to a rescue group, please make it possible for the group to reach you.....

These adorable dachshunds are just a few of the thousands of successful adoptees at the Dallas - Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue in Colleyville, Texas. For more information on how to adopt: https://www.petfinder.com/member/us/tx/colleyville/dallas-fort-worth-dachshund-rescue-foundation-tx686/
Welcome to Freya and Lars, who came from an area animal shelter. They are headed for the vet today to be evaluated and start their needed vet work. They will not be available for adoption for at least six weeks as we always give time for all vet work to be done and for each to settle in a foster home and be evaluated as to what type of home would work. Just a note: they are not a pair and they will not be placed together. Also, these pictures were taken at the shelter. We'll get additional pictures later on.
Today we remember "Jazzy"; who passed away recently. She came to rescue in 2011 and lived 13 years with her great adopters. We are so thankful to all our wonderful adopters who provide loving homes, keep us up on their activities with their dog and let us know when the dog has passed away. We always want to celebrate and honor the lives they had on this earth. Run free Jazzy!
We have a bunch of ceramic dog bowls (brand new) donated to rescue; but we don't use ceramic bowls in foster homes because of breakage. If anyone is interested in one or more bowls, you can email us at: [email protected]
Heads up: Please do not respond to anyone advertising dachshund puppies or dachshunds for adoption other than the dogs in this particular rescue program. NO ONE is allowed to advertise dogs on this page from sources other than DFW Dachshund Rescue. Those advertising are all scammers trying to get your money. We monitor every day and report, block and delete their posts but they are a constant problem. Don't let these types of people scam you.
Jacques is making steady progress in regaining his health. He had one major dental surgery plus two followup dental procedures. He's had one inguinal surgery procedure and will require one more in a couple of weeks. On the plus side, he has finally gained weight, his coat his shiny and he is much more active. Here are pictures from today of Jacques!
Sonnet; the senior dachshund who joined our small sanctuary program, was able to leave the vet hospital after a major surgery. You can see how comfortable she looks at the home of her permanent foster parent. Sonnet has one more major surgery to go--and that is a dental surgery on July 20th. Given all she has been through, she may not have a lot of time left on this earth, but what time she does get--will be the best possible quality time we can give her.
Thanks so much to all our adopters and supporters! We appreciate you!

Our Story
The Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation is a well-established 501(c)3 organization with a history of providing dachshund related education and service to the DFW community. If you are looking to adopt or purchase a dachshund, have dachshund related training or behavior questions, or need to place your dachshund, we may be able to assist you. If not, we will make every effort to find you someone who can.
Dachshunds in our program are fully vetted before adoption. This includes being altered, receiving all needed immunizations, having a dental cleaning and being microchipped. Any other medical issues the dog has will also be addressed before being adopted.
Our dachshunds are placed in foster homes while they undergo rehabilitation and await adoption. This allows us to better evaluate the personalities of each dog, which provides a better match for potential adopters. While in their foster homes, the dachshunds are socialized, given plenty of love and praise, and some begin to pick up basic housetraining skills and obedience.
