⭐️Historical Spotlight⭐️
The Frosted Schnecke is a German sweet bun or roll believed to have originated in the early 19th century, and was very popular throughout Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its direct German translation means 'snail.' The pastry gets its name from the swirl formation that appears after it is rolled and baked. It is often filled with nuts, raisins, or jam. At Roggenart, our Frosted Schnecke is lightly filled with a walnut paste, a dash of cinnamon, and topped with a vanilla drizzle. This pastry is often mistaken for Rugelach, which is a Russian/Polish/Ukrainian pastry rolled out in a circle, cut into wedges, and then rolled up like a crescent. Today, the Schnecke is most commonly found in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, southern Brazil, and the United States.
