Gibson's Gift Store

In 1980, the one and only Susalee Lamb, bought Gibson's on Saluda from Dr. Carl Gibson. She kept the lunch counter until 1982, when she decided that it was too much to handle, and according to her interview in 2014, "She had it with the food industry." Customers missed the lunch counter, and they were upset that it was no longer there ( but that's always the case with every change that takes place.) Susalee brought elegance in the "new" Gibson's, from 1982-2014, when she sold it. In 2005 she moved Gibson's on Devine street, because of the parking on Saluda Avenue. According to her interview, "People couldnt just run in and out for a quick purchase." Susalee was incredible business owner with a darling personality, and great sense of direction. Gibson's flourished in 80's, 90's and early 2000.

So in 1955, " Gibson's on Saluda" opened. It had greeting cards, stationery, gifts, school supplies, some cosmetics, toys, and the most exciting of all, a lunch counter! Yes, Gibson's served breakfast and lunch from 1955 to 1982! We still have the menu. As a matter of fact, we had few customers telling us that their parents had met during their lunch break here and eventually got married.
I have often tried to imagine the whole situation...Wouldn't the greeting cards smell like hamburgers??? One wonders...

In 1955, Dr. Carl Gibson, built the 743 Saluda Av building, and moved from his Gibson Economy Drugstore in Harden St, to this new combination gift shop/lunch counter.

As we are getting ready to close Gibson's, I would like to take few posts and dedicate each post to this lovely gift store, and its story.
Being Greek, I love the history of things, even more than the things themselves. I will start in the beginning:

In 1935, Dr. Carl Gibson opened Gibson Economy Drug Store, in a triangular shape, where Harden meets Santee and Devine. Yesterdays went there, later in 1978.

Sustainably sourced jewelry made from Ankole Horn

Cowgirl boot key rings.
The Cowgirl Boot key ring will make sure you always have a great pair of boots wherever you go. Carved out of cow horn, the Cowgirl Boot key ring comes in assorted color tones.

This unique, hand-crafted horn product is sustainably made from the horns of the Ankole-Watusi, or Ankole Longhorn, a breed of cattle native to western Uganda and parts of East Africa. These distinctive horns are a recycled byproduct of the food industry and are purchased directly from the cattle keepers, providing revenue for local cattle keeping communities. The horn is then hand carved and polished according to Maadili designs by a small scale artisan community.
