A Santa Claus rally describes a sustained increase in the stock market that occurs in the week leading up to Dec. 25.

The term originated with traders who thought that St. Nick would deliver gifts for investors when he returned from his trip around the world on Christmas Eve (as depicted by Clement Moore's poem "A Visit from St Nicholas").

In reality, Santa Claus or St. Nick doesn't determine whether or not your investments will rise or fall—but there are some other factors that can affect how well they perform during this season of giving (and receiving). If you'd like to understand them better, we're here to help.

Financial KPIs, or key performance indicators, are a way to measure the health of your business. If you're a business owner, here are some common ones to consider:

• Sales: How much money did you make?

• Expenses: How much money did you spend?

• Income: How much money did you earn from profit?

• Profit margin: The amount of money left over after expenses are paid.

If this sounds like something you'd like to learn more about, consider scheduling a consultation with us. We'll be happy to help!

Regret aversion bias seeks to avoid the emotional pain of regret often associated with poor decision-making. In finances, this bias can cause financial harm to investors who may, for example, shy away from markets that have recently generated losses.

If you find yourself struggling with regret aversion bias, we can help provide an objective opinion and a second look at your portfolio.

An active investment strategy often involves frequent trading. This investment style typically requires a high level of market analysis and data, as well as constant attention to the markets.

Passive investing, on the other hand, is usually centered on buying assets and holding them for the long term.

Which of these styles better reflects the way you invest? Let us know in the comments!

When we plan on our own, we sometimes don't see the blind spots that hinder us from our goal.

Working with a financial advisor can help illuminate those blind spots, so that no matter what happens, you'll be financially sound.

In current times, business executives may find it nearly impossible to balance the management of day-to-day tasks while also focusing on short and long-term goals.

With the right financial advisor, you can focus on what you love to do—managing your company—while we focus on the financial details of how.

It all starts with a phone call.

While it's important to speak to a team of financial and legal advisors, here are some general tips on how to manage a sudden windfall.

Risk tolerance refers to your ability to take on risk with your investments. There are two main considerations that go into your risk tolerance: your financial capacity to take on risk and your personal comfort level. Together, they help determine the right asset allocation in your portfolio.

For example, a low-risk tolerance means you may invest 40% in stocks, 50% in bonds, and 10% in cash; but a more aggressive (riskier) approach may include 90% in stocks and 10% in bonds.

Now is a great time to make certain your risk tolerance matches your portfolio.

If you're thinking about exercising your employee stock options, it's important to have a strategy in place. Here are a few different options you can bring to your financial advisor to discuss in depth:

1. Sell to cover - buy shares of your company stock, then sell just enough of the shares to cover the cost, taxes, and brokerage commission and fees.

2. Buy shares of your company stock and then hold the stock.

3. If your company is public, you may be able to sell the shares all in one transaction. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the purchase, taxes and fees, and you'll keep the rest.
