We made the most of yesterday's famously hot Columbia heat by building solar ovens and cooking up s'mores! π These campers from Jackson Creek Elementary School's 21st Century Summer Camp were able to harness the energy of the Sun with teamwork and engineering skills.
This summer, the Midlands Reading Consortium has supported 1,482 students in literacy and STEM focused summer camps at our partner schools. π

π This funding helps us to continue providing essential literacy resources to students in our community. During the 2023-2024 school year, we reached 1,460 students through family engagement nights and distributed 1,084 books.
π¬ This year, we are continuing our expansion of STEM education, ensuring that children have access to the skills and knowledge necessary for success in a rapidly evolving world.

Progress at The Village, the new teacher housing development in Fairfield County π₯
United Way of the Midlands has invested $600,000 in the Fairfield County School District Education Foundation for The Village to create affordable 3-bedroom homes for educators. The Village will offer affordable homes π and will welcome its first residents in August 2024, helping to attract and retain teachers by providing quality housing close to Fairfield County schools.
This will be the first residential teacher community in South Carolina.

Last week, we gathered to celebrate the graduating seniors in the Young Men United Pilot Cohort at Second Nazareth Baptist Church. π
As these young men embark on their next chapter, they represent a diverse array of post-graduation plans, each reflecting their individual passions, aspirations, and goals. Some have chosen to pursue higher education at two and four-year institutions, while others will enter the workforce, serve their country, or embark on paths that will lead to meaningful contributions within their communities and beyond.
We're incredibly proud of these young men and look forward to their continuation in the program as they work to complete their post-high school dreams.

United Way of the Midlands is working hard to address our community's shortage of affordable housing along with our partners. In the past two years, we have invested $2.8 million in affordable housing initiatives leveraging more than $56 million in total project costs. This represents 336 housing units toward our goal of 500.
With rising rents and home prices bearing down, Richland County could spend $4M for relief More than 17,000 renters in Richland County spend more than half of their income on housing.

Big thanks to all across the Midlands who participated in National Volunteer Week last week. Hundreds of volunteers rallied across our community giving their time to dozens of local organizations, giving back to make our community a better place to live, work and play.
We're thrilled that we could partner with so many organizations to offer over 30 volunteer projects. Thank you to our host organizations for opening your doors to our volunteers. We look forward to next year!

With nearly 70 Community Impact Partners, United Way works to identify and respond to the critical human service needs of Calhoun, Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg and Richland counties. Funds are raised through workplace campaigns, grant writing and individual donations and are directed to fight for causes including childhood literacy, economic mobility and dental and eye care for those without resources.
