Irmo Fire District
We, as a team, will strive to minimize losses and suffering through effective emergency service delivery, public education and community involvement.
Using training and education as our foundation, the Irmo Fire District is committed to providing professional fire and life safety services to the citizens of our community in a fiscally responsible manner.
We hope you'll join us this Saturday for a benefit hockey game honoring J Muller! This is a FREE event with raffles, giveaways, and cool merch!🤙
Thank you to Charleston Enforcers Hockey Team and Richland Blueliners for honoring Tunnel to Towers Foundation and our fallen brother, J, with this event.
What an amazing gesture and the perfect way to honor J! 🤙🏻
Many, MANY, thanks to Midlands Mafia for their generous donation of $1,000 to the Muller Memorial Training Fund!
The Muller Memorial Training Fund was established in 2024 in order to create unique training opportunities for the men and women of Irmo Fire District in honor of our fallen brother, J Muller. ❤️🩹
Our first donation to this fund was raised by the Midlands Mafia training group consisting of Irmo Professional Firefighters, Columbia Firefighters Association - IAFF Local 793, West Columbia Professional Firefighters Local 5361, Cayce Local, and Lexington Local 4529.
We are exceptionally grateful for their fund raising efforts! 💪
Good afternoon Irmo!
Irmo Fire crews are on scene of a tractor trailer accident westbound 26 at MM 105. The vehicle left the freeway and ended up on Fernandina Road, only a mile short of the off ramp.
There are no injuries, but traffic is very slow on the freeway in both directions and on Fernandina.
Expect delays until at least 5:30 pm, removing the truck is going to be complicated.
Just a friendly heads up about some work our friends at SCDOT are doing this week.
We had a great time supporting a great cause! All are welcome to come view our trophy on display at our Headquarters Station.🏆😎
Happy 4th of July from all of us at Irmo Fire! We hope you have a safe and memorable holiday! 🇺🇸🚒🦅
🚨Traffic Alert 🚨
Update: as of 12:30 the roadway was clear, but traffic is still slow.
Around 11:30 today a vehicle accident occurred on Jamil Rd next to the freeway, sending a pickup through the fence into the grass next to the freeway. Shortly afterwards a second accident occurred on the freeway in nearly the same spot.
We’re not sure yet if they’re related - the incidents or the drivers - but one lane of 26 Eastbound is closed at the 105 and traffic is slowed in both directions of Jamil.
Thankfully injuries are minor and we hope to have the roadways cleared up soon.
Our 3rd Shift crews and Irmo Fire District units found heavy fire coming from an apartment building after they were dispatched out for an early morning fire on Wood Court.
The building was vacant at the time of the fire. One civilian on scene had to be taken by Richland County EMS to an area hospital for minor injuries.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished. The Richland County Fire Marshal’s Office is looking into what caused it.
Some great 4th of July tips from our friends at Irmo Police Department! 💥👍🏻

IFD units lined Fernandina Road this morning during the procession of Richland County Sheriff's Department’s K9 Wick. We are mourning this tragic loss alongside our brothers in blue.
RIP K9 Wick. Thank you for your service.
Today, we remember our Charleston 9 and their sacrifice.
On June 18, 2007, the Charleston Fire Department lost nine brave firefighters while battling a devastating blaze at a furniture store. These heroes were memorialized on June 22, 2007. A procession of more than 300 fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances, and command vehicles stretched approximately 7.5 miles and moved single-file along a route which passed each of the three fire stations from which firefighters were lost, as well as past the site of the fatal fire.
Irmo Fire crews responded to an early morning structure fire in the 200 block of Zephyr Street.
With help from our partners at County of Lexington, SC Fire Department, West Columbia Fire Department and Columbia Fire Department (SC) the fire is now under control. There have been no injuries and the cause is under investigation.
Crews faced heavy fire conditions on arrival and had to contend with a melted gas meter and gas leak.
The house was destroyed by the fire.
Firefighter James Muller was honored at EdVenture Children’s Museum this morning during their annual Lighting of the Firefly Ceremony.
The museum had previously sought the public's help in naming the firefly that rests on Eddie's finger and received over one hundred nominations. Among those nominated was Irmo's own J Muller. Today's ceremony kicked off the start of summer, lit the firefly for the season, and formally introduced him as "J", in honor of firefighter Muller.
We had quite the ED-VENTURE exploring the museum- particularly "Dalmatian Station", getting our blood pressure checked by Prisma Health, and honoring our ever-deserving brother, J.
Today we laid to rest our Chaplain, Anthony Giunta, known to us as "Doc".
Doc faithfully served as our District's Chaplain from 2017 until his passing earlier this month. He was a Catholic Priest and retired Military Chaplain, as well as a former Firefighter, Arson Investigator, and Clinical Psychologist/Pastoral Counselor.
While we are saddened that he is no longer earth side, we are grateful for many years of memories that we will eternally cherish. We feel blessed to have had him as our Chaplain.
He will be missed.
Sad news for fans of helpful information infused with snark and sass.
A tip o’ the hat to you, sir. I’ll do my best to carry on without you.
So, we have news. Our social media Meme King is departing the land of SCEMD, bound for a land of new meme abilities. Forever a part of our family, we wish him the best in the next chapter of grand gif adventures.
As for us and what you see here… 😇
🚧Traffic Issues Part 3🚧
They say bad things come in threes. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you traffic mess #3 for the coming week.
Westbound traffic on 20 will be detoured around the Broad River Road overpass this coming Sunday through Tuesday. The freeway will be closed from 11 pm to 5am each night so that construction crews can demolish the old overpass.
For those of you who travel 20: if it’s dark, plan to park.
As a bonus, crews will be adding several new potholes, gouges and dust to the freeway.
The detour is simple, just get off the freeway and get right back on. You’ll be at the mercy of the traffic light on Broad River though. It changes faster than the go lights at a drag race.
Eastbound traffic will suffer the same indignities the following week.
Overnight detours scheduled at I-20 and Broad River Road interchange Columbia, S.C. (May 29, 2024) - Starting Sunday, June 2, SCDOT will begin demolishing the old bridge on Broad River Road over Interstate 20 at Exit 65. Traffic will be directed onto the off-ramp to Broad River Road at exit 65, through the intersection, and back down the on-ramp to I-20.
This afternoon Irmo Fire crews and crews from Dutch Fork Fire Rescue and Columbia Fire Department (SC) provided assistance to Lexington County Fire crews fighting a residential structure fire on Old Lexington Hwy in the Chapin area.
There were no injuries and the fire was quickly brought under control. The roadway was blocked by fire equipment and hose for quite some time. Unfortunately the house suffered substantial damage.
🚧Weekend Traffic # 2🚧
We’re tempting fate this weekend with another roadway change. Both the on and off ramps from 26 eastbound at Columbia Ave / exit 91 in Chapin will change (again) on Sunday Jun 2.
The new on and off ramps will open, and the previously used on and off ramps will close.
If you’re the type to drive through the construction zone at 80, you might miss the changes. Or you might hit them, as many of you already have.
If you’re the type to drive through the construction zone at 40, you might miss the changes too, but everybody behind you will have plenty of time to look around and take in the sights.
If you’re heading Westbound through the area there will be no changes to your side of the freeway, which means there’s no reason to slow down to see what’s going on across the freeway.
No.
Reason.
Here’s a cute little diagram of the changes. For more info on the project, visit https://scdotmidlandsconnection.com/updates/
🚧Weekend traffic alert🚧
Good morning Irmo! It’s been a while since we’ve had any traffic woes, but as SCDOT likes to say, “we can fix that.”
The 126 westbound connector ramp to 26 eastbound will close this weekend. 8pm Friday to sometime Monday morning ish. See the map.
For those of you confused on the direction of travel:
126 westbound is the one that heads out of Columbia towards Irmo. If your car has a compass, it’ll say you’re heading NW.
26 eastbound is the one you take from Irmo to Charleston if you love watching two trucks try to pass each other at the exact same speed. If you have a compass in your car, it’ll say you’re heading southwest on this section. Of an eastbound freeway. Trust me.
The suggested detour takes you through the interchange of two east-west freeways that cross at nearly a 90 degree angle, neither of which actually point east or west at the interchange. If your car has a compass, ignore it at this point. Nobody needs to see the truth when you’re trying to follow somebody else’s directions.
There are several ways to get around the closure, but SCDOT suggests we maximize weekend traffic through malfunction junction. If you have the Waze app, it has been reliable lately.
Remember to slow down in the cone zone and give the workers a brake. If you wave at them, please use all five fingers.
We were honored to join alongside Irmo Police Department and the Irmo Community this morning for the Town of Irmo's First Responders Memorial Unveiling. We are grateful for all the hard work that went into this memorial which honors Irmo's Fire, Police, and EMS personnel.
E172 B Shift crews responded to calls of an entrapped kitten in the Meredith Drive area tonight. Upon arrival, crews found this little guy stuck in the steering column of a vehicle. He was safely extricated and sustained no injuries. 🐱 He has since been adopted!
B Shift Crews gathered at our Childs Street Station this morning and completed a Muller E171 Memorial Day workout. 💪🇺🇸
In the words of our brother J, "No ceremonial high fives here."
🤙
All gave some, some gave all.
Muller E171 Workout for Memorial Day. 🇺🇸 Fire Personnel are challenged to complete this in full gear/breathing air.
Today and every day, we will honor and remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice.
