Go Gamecocks 🐓
When I was approached with this job, I never ever ever in 1000 million years thought that it would turn out this well, but it did.
These are ALL ARTIFICIAL PLANTS AND FLOWERS!
Absolutely beautiful if I do say so myself 💅🏻🩷💐
This is what my son, West, and I call: splitting the wickets.
The slow unfurling of the back spiky leaves of a sunflower.
It seems as if they will never open and then all of a sudden do, with no explanation except that that was the plan all along – I just didn’t know it.
They continue to open several days after being cut- water being the only ingredient necessary.
The apex, well you already know the beauty of the apex, if you’ve ever seen a sunflower.
It’s the process that has me in awe currently.
The splitting of our wickets is nothing short of divine.

For me, it’s flowers.
I keep noticing the things that aren’t following routine.
I love routine.
I love the trash to run on time,
I love to sit on my porch every morning with my coffee and have the exact same slant of light that I had the morning before, hit the third step up while I perch on the fifth step,
I love for the cats to show up at the same time for breakfast- same order not necessary,
I love for the standard neighbors to walk their dogs by, as I’m finishing up my coffee,
I love for the birds I am used to, to chirp as the sun rises,
I love for the same paths for entrance and exit to be open and free.
But, the seasons are changing.
Catastrophic weather has happened and is happening.
As I write this.
Whole people are missing- vanished into thin air.
Where did you go, bud?
And I…
I am focused on the tree and the trash.
Foolishly, out of survival, out of sanity:
I am focused on the tree and the trash.
Why has my big trash can been sitting at the curb since the evening of August 26th, full of stinking, rotting trash?
Why is my normal egress pathway still blocked by this damngiant tree?
The system is overloaded, sis.
The system is overloaded.
Back off,
Chill out.
Pray to the tree, pray to the trash can, pray to God- what it is, is irrelevant.
But y’all…
The system is overloaded.
And it can’t take much more.
But,
The trash got got today.
It left a stink tunnel in it’s wake, but
The trash got got today.
This isn’t an emergency and this isn’t a problem.
This isn’t even an annoyance.
What this is though, is a loss.
It is grief.
Embodied.
It is grief.
Free-form.
The garden is in ruins- my zinnia and basil bushes are kaput.
Wind bent and water sodden.
Making the decision to pull the bushes out was a hard one, because there are bushes that are half alive andOr half dead or dying.
Half dead and dying got me glitchy.
I knew it was time, though.
It’s been getting time- Helene merely sealed the deal.
To try and save them- the half dead ones, at least- would have been silly and frivolous.
Pragmatism is what is called for!
…but I’ve never shied away from sillivoty and frivolity .
Most were completely dead and dried up.
But even though…
even though, it was hard to pull them out of the ground.
So final.
My first growing season is over and it’s on me to accept that.
Sometimes it takes a hurricane.
Except I’m not really ready to accept that.
Excepting, but not too great at accepting.
But then again, the thought of the work being over- for now- feels pretty good.
Rest.
It’s complicated though.
What I did notice was that the ground gave way.
The ground isn’t hard and crackled.
The ground is soft and pliant.
Flooded.
Sometimes that’s what it takes:
Murky Scorpio mixing with that unbending Cap.
Beautiful dark and rich
that releases easily, once convinced.
God’s lil nudge to keep moving.
To keep pulling, to keep cleaning.
Working while feeling.
Yes, Joanna- what you’re doing is what I intended.
Sorry for the hurricane, but…
IYKYK.
Pain in the ass.

*I wish I could convey the aroma of this bouquet through this post: rosemary, lavender, basil, eucalyptus and lilies all came together and created such an incredible smell!
Old Debby the Tropical Storm was not kind to June Bug Urban Farm .
She took out most of my basil and about half my zinnia.
I’ve been feeling pretty sad about it, but have turned the corner and have made a choice to take as much control of the situation as I can.

Sooooo…. I’m cleaning out the back half of the garden.
That process includes unhooking the w**d mat and pulling it all the way off, digging up stumps and w**ds, tilling the soil and then replacing the w**d mat.
It’s a pretty tedious and sweaty process, but I’ll be glad I took the time and made the effort in a couple weeks when I do my second planting.
God willing: red, purple, cream and orange sunflowers by November!
I do still have plenty of flowers though if you need a bouquet for yourself or someone special!
That heifer Debby didn’t get them all 💃🏻💐🥳
