Twain’s next book club meeting is Tuesday, July 2! We will be discussing James: A Novel by Percival Everett:
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.
While many narrative set pieces of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remain in place (floods and storms, stumbling across both unexpected death and unexpected treasure in the myriad stopping points along the river’s banks, encountering the scam artists posing as the Duke and Dauphin…), Jim’s agency, intelligence and compassion are shown in a radically new light.
The book can be preordered through bookshop either online or in store. We hope to see you at our next meeting for a night of brews, books, and good conversation!

Twain’s next book club meeting is Tuesday, June 4! We will be discussing Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by the one and only Mark Twain:
"The classic boyhood adventure tale, updated with a new introduction by noted Mark Twain scholar R. Kent Rasmussen and a foreword by Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lo**ta in Tehran and The Republic of Imagination.
In recent years, neither the persistent effort to “clean up” the racial epithets in Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn nor its consistent use in the classroom have diminished, highlighting the novel’s wide-ranging influence and its continued importance in American society. An incomparable adventure story, it is a vignette of a turbulent, yet hopeful epoch in American history, defining the experience of a nation in voices often satirical, but always authentic."
The book can be preordered through Skylark Bookshop either online or in store. We hope to see you at our next meeting for a night of brews, books, and good conversation!
Located in the heart of downtown Columbia, Twain is the perfect destination to satiate your BBQ cravings.
