Summer Intern Spotlight
Meet Christopher Taylor

14-year-old Chris Taylor will be a 9th grader this year at Dutch Fork High School. He is the oldest of 4 siblings.

Chris spent his internship working with our maintenance team. “I love this job very much. My daily tasks include repairing doors and doorknobs, as well as fixing light bulbs, and painting.”
When asked about how he feels about his job he responds “It’s going great. I get to learn new things daily.”

When grows up, Chris wants to be a business owner.

We are proud of you Chris, keep up the good work!

07/25/2024

14 year old Jayla Johnson is bright and determined. She’s looking forward to her 9th grade year at C. A. Johnson High School.

Jayla says her favorite subject in school is history “because she likes to understand how and why things work; as well as the context of things.”

Jayla is in the ROTC and is extremely responsible. Being responsible is a great quality and she put it to use as an intern in the Property Management Department. She helped with inspections as well as keeping track of multiple properties and projects.

Well Done, Jayla!

Summer Intern Spotlight
Meet Nathan Jamison

15-year-old Nathan attends Eau Claire. This summer he interned with the Maintenance Department. After he finishes high school, Nathan says he wants to continue to work in the field. “I’m hands-on individual. I already do a lot of repairs at home.”

Nathan is a huge basketball fan. Right now he plays on Columbia Housing’s Basketball Team—‘The Columbia Strong’.

Thanks for your work this summer Nathan!

Summer Intern Spotlight
Meet Jhion Fane

16-year old Jhion Fane says he never thought he’d enjoy his summer job as much as he does.

“I have gained skills that I never would have imagined. I love my work. As an intern in the Maintenance Department—I’m repairing toilets, installing plugs, and other household repairs.”

Turns out, Jhion’s summer job is a perfect fit for him. He wants to be a businessman and an independent contractor in the future.

When asked what motivates him, Jhion replied ’faith and family’.

Jhion is looking forward to starting his junior year at a new school—Westwood High—for the 2024/2025 school year.

Good luck for an awesome school year, Jhion!

Summer Intern Spotlight
Meet Emonii Morton

15 year old Emonii Morton is
determined to work hard, meet her goals and make her family proud.

As a rising 10th grader at Spring Valley High, Emonii is still figuring out what career path to take—but she does like the ‘glam professions’: hair stylist, make up artist; fashion consultant— things like that.

Emonii’s internship in the Strategic Initiatives Department gives her an opportunity to see up close Columbia Housing’s special programs and activities for residents. She likes that because “I hope to help my community and have a huge impact in others people’s lives in the future.”

Great job, Emonii!

Enrichment Series
Summer Youth Employment

“A Candid Conversation with Senator Tameika Isaac Devine”

Few elected officials can match Senator Tameika Isaac Devine’s track record of community service.

She was in her element as she fielded questions from our 14-19 year old summer interns.
They asked her about career highs & lows. They asked her about being a mother & balancing everything she does. They asked her career as a lawyer and how she met her husband. They asked what it’s like working in the Senate where few other women get to work.

Thanks Senator Devine for answering EVERY question honestly & lovingly. 💕 You truly poured into our young interns and we can’t thank you enough. 🙏🏽

Summer Intern Spotlight
Meet Jakira Mobley

As the intern in the Capital Assets Department at Columbia Housing, Jakira has an interesting behind the scenes view of the new developments Columbia Housing currently has under construction.

Jakira says her internship gives her a deeper understanding about the importance of building more affordable housing. “The more people we help with affordable housing—the more likely it is that they can help others in the future.”

Right now, Jakira is focused on starting her first year at Eau Claire high school. She is an athlete and loves playing basketball. But “dancing is her psssion. When I’m dancing—I feel free. All worries vanish when I am dancing!”

Good job and good luck starting high school Jakira!!

Summer Internship Spotlight
Meet Terence Myers

Terence Myers is a 17-year-old with a BIG vision. “I believe I have a chance to make the world a better place. We lost my dad, my brother, and my uncle all in 2021. So, I want to live my life to honor them. I want my life to make a difference.” Terence’s placement in the Property Management Department is his first job.

His supervisor Mina Scott Barnes says she can already see that he has a strong work ethic.
“Terence reports to work on time, completes tasks as assigned, and takes pride in his work. That will take him far.” Terence has his sights set on being an IT professional in the future.

Terence points to his mom’s strength as his inspiration. “Losing my dad, my brother, and my uncle so close together was hard on the whole family. My Mom helps us hold it together.”

Thank you, Terence, for a job well done at Columbia Housing!

Communications Intern Kazariyah Sanders contributed to this story.

We’re leaving Washington DC confident that we’ve made clear the needs in our state around Affordable Housing.
