CCS Growing Teachers
My name is Katie Young and I am the Farm to School/Nutrition Coordinator for Columbus City Schools.
The Garden Club at Hubbard ES has grown some beautiful bok choy! They are also finding some wonderful worms who are working their magic under the soil to help their garden grow.
The 4th and 5th graders at Georgian Heights have been busy moving composted soils into our newest garden area.
Teachers please encourage your students and their families to join us this weekend to celebrate agriculture with many of our community partners. Some of the activities include:
Meet the sheep 🐑
Take home lettuce 🌱
Bird walk 🦅

Smoothie Bike
Milk jug Greenhouse
Meet R.L. Stine
Paint with Soil
Seed Art
Root view cup
Learn about 🐝

I ran into a few of my Fort Hayes friends this Saturday at the Spruce Run Open House. They explored the high ridge and discovered a cool animal skull.
Did you know that 1,000 red wriggler worms can help compost 3 lbs of food waste per week? Fort Hayes students work together to create the perfect environment for their worms to be added into their vermicomposting bin.
Check out these amazing bok choy leaves!! Student growers from Woodward Park Middle School harvested a beautiful harvest from their garden tower. Tomorrow they will be cooking up their harvest together.
This beauty greeted me as I walked into the Food Service offices today. It is a drawf sunflower growing inside the Miracle Grow Twelve unit.
How's everyone's school growing going?
Here's our Week in the School Garden post from Tim McDermott to let you know how to best tend to your outdoor raised beds, seed starting kits and Aerogarden units.

Thank you to first grade scientist at Eastgate for inviting me to class today. We set up their growing stations and planted cherry tomatoes, kale, lettuce, bok choy, and collard greens. They will be on the lookout for sprouts this week.
Student growers from CSIA plant new seeds in the rockwool for their new TowerGarden. Once the seeds are in they added vermiculite on top to help hold in the moisture.
Lots of harvesting and cooking happening at Columbus Spanish Immersion! Remember that if you are ready for a Harvest Celebration at your school you can request one of our Harvest Cooking Carts to be delivered to your school . Just email Katie a week in advance .
Check out this beautiful basil and bok choy growing in the Shady Lane Cafe.
Thank you to Amy from SWACO for teaching our CCS garden leaders all about vermicomposting. Each teach who attended this PD went home with their very own worm bin so they can teach their students what they learned. Did you know that 1000 red wriggler worms can compost around 3.5lbs of food waste each week? The worm castings that they create can then be added to our school gardens to help our plants grow! Our next garden PD will be held on February 28th. Each teacher who attends will learn how to use your new Foldscopes in the garden with students. If interested register in PDS for STEM in the Garden.
Students from the BioScience program at Fort Hayes Career Center learned how to use a light meter from Tim McDermott, our OSU Extension Educator. Then students worked together to place new plants into their NFT growing system. Lots of learning is happening in Ms. Wycinski’s classroom!
Student growers at Fort Hayes HS are working with Ms. Kat, our AMAZING Master Gardener, to plant pollinator seeds in milk jugs so they will have time to grow outdoors and be ready to plant in the new pollinator garden that the Green Team will install this Spring.
Community partners from Franklin Park Conservatory and GreenScapes Landscaping are working with parents and the community of Salem Elementary to design an amazing community garden that will be installed the Spring/Summer.
Students at Woodward Park MS worked together to plant new plants in their Tower Garden. They tasted some of the extra sprouts and learned how to add in the nutrients and check the pH of the water in the tower reservoir. The class visit was extra special for me because I got to see some of my former Devonshire students.
Today Valley Forge growers harvested their spinach that they had growing in the gro tower in the classroom. They made strawberry spinach salads with raspberry vinaigrette. Most loved it and would eat it again.
Scholars from Ms. Johnson’s class did one final harvest from their AeroGarden for 2023. Cherry tomatoes will be planted in the AeroGarden in the new year.
