“I have really been impressed with the Modern Manufacturing Program, and Columbus State's dedication to their students. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, my work-study assignment ended prematurely. Leveraging the contacts I made during the prior year interview process, I was able to connect with another MMWS program employer. I am excited to say that I recently accepted a full-time offer of employment with this employer. Columbus State and the MMWS program played an essential role in jump-starting my career.”

“It was a smooth transition from high school to college and now I’m here. In the Modern Manufacturing Work-Study Program, I worked part-time making $18 an hour. Upon graduation, Honda offered me a full-time position as a robotics technician. Going forward, I will be continuing my education, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Miami University Middleton."

STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Diana Reyes
Diana went through ITFA and received an apprenticeship at State Auto. Moved to the USA and taught herself English. Passion for painting and art. She became a Lawyer in Columbia and began working with the Columbian government “In my job I was finding that in Columbia we had a lot of trouble with technology. It’s not like here where we have the best internet. In my office and my team in Columbia, we had a lot of technology trouble and as I would fix it, I realized I loved technology.” She came to the USA five years ago and started with nothing. A degree that didn’t transfer, no English other than how to say “hello and how are you.” She then did two years of community college in Boston where she learned English. Finally, she came to Columbus where she got connected with Columbus State where she finished her English courses and was given the opportunity to study IT. She decided on software development and then to pursue the ITFA program after hearing about it in class. In Columbia, during her first degree, she had no pursued an internship which hurt her when finding a job so she was determined to not make that mistake again. “This is an amazing opportunity; I have to be here.” “When you looking for a job, employers are looking for talent and experience. This program gives you both.”
STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Jeanne Pierce
“My kids started going to college, I had gotten a divorce, and I needed to re-discover myself.” Jeanne Pierce became a product of self-reinvention as she dove wholeheartedly into Columbus State’s IT Flexible Apprenticeship Program. She remarks, “The IT Flexible Apprenticeship team held my hand and reminded me that even though I had taken many years off to raise my children, I still had A LOT to offer. They helped me build my confidence both professionally and in the IT Field. Now, I am working as an apprentice at State Auto while I earn my Software Development, A.A.S.” Set to graduate in 2021, Jeanne will leave the program with a degree in hand, nearly one-year of professional IT work experience and a solid foundation for achieving her career goals."
STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Khalida Menguellati
Shortly after arriving in the U.S. nearly 10 years ago from her home country of Algeria, Khalida Menguellati quickly began to craft a vision for her future in Information Technology. With an existing academic foundation which included a bachelor’s degree in business, Khalida sought out Columbus State Community College (CSCC) as a place to continue her education. After selecting the Software Developer AAS program, Khalida was off and running in pursuit of her future career goals. At the mid-way point in the program, Khalida had the opportunity to learn more about the IT Flexible Apprenticeship program, a DOL-funded offering of CSCC. Through that program and outcomes of a competitive interview process, Khalida landed an Apprenticeship with State Auto, an insurance company with its corporate HQ in Columbus, OH. Gaining experience in the Agile application development methodology and other fundamental programming languages, Khalida worked 20-24+ hours a week during her nearly 9-month paid Apprenticeship. Disappointed to learn that she would not be retained as a full-time employee following her Apprenticeship, Khalida quickly turned her attention to continuing to develop her skill set and leverage her Apprenticeship as a catalyst to full-time employment. Her efforts included and were not limited to enrolling in a bachelor’s program at Western Governors University and joining meet-up groups to build her professional network and technical ability which included taking it upon herself to learn React. All the while, she continued to apply for and pursue different employment opportunities. After about 9 months, her efforts were rewarded with 2 full-time offers. One was for a full-time, permanent position, the other a full-time contract opportunity. Khalida’s hard work, perseverance, resilience, and participation in the Columbus State IT Flexible Apprenticeship program have all contributed to her current and future success.
