It's almost school ball time - that means it is time for my annual post explaining how that impacts our players and teams.

The Ohio HS rules are that once a Middle School or High School sanctioned team competes in their first scrimmage or game against another school the players are prohibited from participating in their travel team practices/games until released. BUT, many coaches actually prohibit players from the time they post the final rosters. It is best to error on the side of caution by checking with your school ball coach as to their rule.

Players can take instruction, pitching/hitting from ANY instructor - even their travel ball coach at any time. That is never prohibited.

Additionally, as we enter the spring and our summer season fast approaches Hawks players are not permitted to pick-up / play with other travel clubs. The main reason is that we schedule our teams with a purpose from mid-May to early August. We have a few weekends off, those are designed to allow players to rest, recover and families to spent time away from the ballpark. We also do not want teams put in jeopardy by having key players injured while playing away from their team. That is selfish and puts 11 to 12 other families at risk for the teams success.

A coach may make an exception, like if a team is off and the player has a chance to play in a showcase where a school that they are interested in will be, it may make sense for them to go and get the exposure. This is for 16u/18u primarily where recruiting is critical. But, our teams also play in the best showcases, there is almost always a chance for a Hawks player in this instance to go play with another Hawks team in that showcase.

Lastly, Players practice/play from Jan until August - it is a lot of ball, a lot of wear and tear - overuse injuries are too common - taking time to get away and recover physically and mentally is an important part of the process for a player.

So, go have fun in school ball, it is a great time to spend with friends and work on your craft... we will see you in mid-May!

The Hawks have rented Bo Jackson this Sunday from 2-4p. We will have 30 players doing combine workouts training and scrimmaging. Any 14u and above player that would like to come please let me know ... the Hawks are picking up a portion of the cost, players will pay $10 for the 2 hours.
