Resch's Bakery

Audra Satterwhite's mom, Kathy, is in a nursing home and she was having a little bit of a down day. She asked me to bring her something sweet to brighten her day so I stopped in Resch’s Bakery, saw that big boy doughnut, and immediately purchased it for my mom. When she opened the box, she was so tickled, that she could not believe the donut was that big and just laughed and laughed. She even got to share it with her friends and that’s the part she loves the most, that made her day much better.

On Thursday, everyone in the northern half of our planet will experience the summer solstice. It’ll be the longest day of the year north of the Equator, and it is the scientific start of summer.

Earth has a solstice every six months, in June and in December. Leading up to the summer solstice, the sun appears in a higher spot in the sky at the same time each day until it reaches its maximum point.

After the summer solstice, the days will get shorter. The sun will appear lower in the sky each day until the winter solstice, on Dec. 21.

Melinda Poston Key wrote: My grandmother, Margie Ice, worked for Resch’s for many years. She would always bring treats over to us to enjoy. I especially loved Resch’s twisted glazed donuts. She passed away last February! Just wanted to share this. She loved working there!

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.
