Russell Hamler, last of famed WWII Merrill’s Marauders, dies at age 99 27/12/2023

The last surviving member of World War II’s famed Merrill’s Marauders, who endured harsh conditions, malnutrition, and relentless tropical disease as they fought behind Japanese enemy lines in Burma, has died.

Russell Hamler died Tuesday at a veterans hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He was 99.

His death was confirmed by Jonnie Melillo Clasen, whose father was a Marauder. In recent years, Clasen has served as an informal liaison to the still-living Marauders and their families as the veterans grew too old for reunions.

Hamler had been living with his son Jeffrey in Baldwin Township, Pa. until he was hospitalized, Clasen told Stars and Stripes in an email Tuesday.

Hamler was the last of roughly 3,000 original Marauders sent to capture an airfield in Burma, now known as Myanmar, a mission few were expected to survive.

In trenches deep, on this Christmas Eve,
As snowflakes fall, I can't help but grieve,
For home and family, so far away,
But duty calls, and here I must stay.

Surrounded by comrades, in the cold and dark,
We stand together, a united spark,
Protecting our land, our freedom we defend,
As we pray for peace, this war to end.

The stockings are hung by our beds with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon will be there,
But instead of presents, we wish for a sign,
That soon we'll return to the ones we call mine.

Our voices may tremble, our hearts may be heavy,
But the spirit of Christmas keeps us steady,
We find hope in each other, in our bonds so tight,
As we dream of a world where there's no need to fight.

So on this silent night, under the stars above,
I send you my love, from a soldier's heart with love,
Merry Christmas to all, near and far,
May peace and goodwill shine like a star.

82 years ago on this night, 2,403 families went to sleep, well aware of what was going on in the world, but had no idea that they would lose a family member tomorrow.

On the night of Dec. 6, 1941, there was a band competition called the 'Battle of Music' at Bloch Arena on Naval Station Pearl Harbor, featuring Navy bands from ships homeported in Pearl Harbor and attached to shore installations in Hawaii. The USS Arizona band had already won the first round Sept. 13, 1941, and was not scheduled to play again until the final competition.

During the elimination tournament on the evening of Dec. 6, bands from the USS Pennsylvania (BB 38), USS Tennessee (BB 43), USS Argonne (AG 31), and the submarine base competed against one another. Several members of the USS Arizona band attended the contest to see their upcoming competition and to visit with School of Music shipmates in the Tennessee band.

On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, while the band from the USS Nevada (BB 36) played morning colors, the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor started. The entire USS Arizona Band, while at battle stations passing ammunition under gun turret number one, was killed in the attack. In the weeks to follow, all the bands that had participated in the 'Battle of Music' voted to posthumously award the tournament trophy to the USS Arizona Band, and renamed it the 'Arizona Trophy.'

Lest we forget.

Visiting Columbus? One interesting fact about the history of Columbus, Georgia is its significant role during the Civil War. Columbus was a key industrial center for the Confederacy, producing textiles, uniforms, and other supplies for the Southern war effort. The city became known as the "Arsenal of the Confederacy" due to its vital contributions to the Confederate military.

During the Civil War, Columbus was spared from major battles, but it did experience the Battle of Columbus in April 1865, which occurred after the fall of Atlanta. Union forces, led by General James H. Wilson, captured the city and its important manufacturing facilities. The city's industrial infrastructure was heavily damaged, marking a turning point in the war. It is known as the place for the last land battle of the Civil War.

Today, visitors to Columbus can explore historical sites and museums that provide insights into the city's role during the Civil War, offering a glimpse into this significant period of American history.

KIA November 17, 1965
Vietnam

Army SPC Jimmy Nakayama, a second lieutenant in the Idaho National Guard, transitioned to the regular Army and surrendered his commission. He was deployed to Vietnam and was part of the first battle between the U.S. and North Vietnam in what is known as the Battle of Ia Drang. Nakayama met UPI News Reporter, Joe Galloway, who was there to cover the intense battle. Both engaged in small talk when they first met, then hours later Galloway was trying to save Jimmy’s life. Galloway was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic actions while accompanying the 7th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Ia Drang.

Excerpt from Joe Galloway’s book, “A Reporter’s Journal From Hell”:

“The first had just released two cans of na**lm. The second was about to do the same. Lt. Charlie Hastings, the Air Force forward observer, was screaming into his mike: Pull up! Pull up! The second plane pulled up. That left the two cans of na**lm loblollying end over end towards us. Gregg Dillon buried his face in my shoulder. Later he would tell me he had heard if na**lm was coming in you should protect your eyes. The two cans went right over our heads and impacted no more than 20 yards from us, the jellied gasoline spreading out and flaming up going away from us. That 20 yards saved our lives but through the blazing fire I could see two men, two Americans, dancing in that fire, I jumped to my feet. So did medic Tommy Burlile. Burlile was shot in the head by a sniper before he could reach the scene. I charged on in and someone was yelling, “Get this man’s feet!” I reached down and grabbed the ankles of a horribly burned soldier. They crumbled and the skin and flesh, now cooked, rubbed off. I could feel his bare ankle bones in the palms of my hands. We carried him to the aid station. Later I would learn that his name was Jimmy D. Nakayama of Rigby, Idaho. His wife, Trudie, had given birth to their first child, a daughter named Nikki, on November 7. Jimmy died in an Army hospital two days later, on November 17. For a lot of years I looked for Jimmy’s wife and daughter. Last month, after the movie We Were Soliers was released I received a letter from Jimmy’s widow. Last week a letter came from his daughter Nikki, now 36 years old and the mother of two young sons. No single day has passed since that long-ago November day that I have not thought about Jimmy Nakayama, the young woman who loved him, and the daughter who would never know a father’s love.”

SPC Jimmy Nakayama was 21 years old from Rigby, Idaho

The original portrait was presented on November 2, 2013, to his wife and daughter during a special “We Were Soldiers” film screening.

May he never be forgotten!

Did you know this about the history of our great city?

Columbus, Georgia, once the site of a Creek Indian Village, is one of the few cities in the United States to be planned before its founding. Established in 1828 as a trading post to strengthen the western border of Georgia, Columbus was the last "frontier town" of the original Thirteen Colonies.

I AM A VETERAN

You may not know me the first time we meet
I’m just another you see on the street
But I am the reason you walk and breathe free
I am the reason for your liberty

I AM A VETERAN

I work in the local factory all-day
I own the restaurant just down the way
I sell you insurance, I start your IV
I’ve got the best-looking grandkids you’ll ever see

I’m your grocer, your banker
Your child’s schoolteacher
I’m your plumber, your barber
Your family’s preacher
But there’s part of me you don’t know very well
Just listen a moment, I’ve a story to tell

I AM A VETERAN

I joined the service while still in my teens
I traded my prom dress for camouflage greens
I’m the first in my family to do something like this
I followed my father, like he followed his

Defying my fears and hiding my doubt
I married my sweetheart before I shipped out
I missed Christmas, then Easter
The birth of my son
But I knew I was doing what had to be done

I served on the battlefront, I served on the base
I bound up the wounded
And begged for God’s grace
I gave orders to fire, I followed commands
I marched into conflict in far distant lands

In the jungle, the desert, on mountains and shores
In bunkers, in tents, on dank earthen floors
While I fought on the ground, in the air, on the sea
My family and friends were home praying for me

For the land of the free and the home of the brave
I faced my demons in foxholes and caves
Then one dreaded day, without drummer or fife
I lost an arm, my buddy lost his life

I came home and moved on
But forever was changed
The perils of war in my memory remained
I don’t really say much, I don’t feel like I can
But I left home a child, and came home a man

There are thousands like me
Thousands more who are gone
But their legacy lives as time marches on
White crosses in rows
And names carved in queue
Remind us of what these brave souls had to do

I’m part of a fellowship, a strong mighty band
Of each man and each woman
Who has served this great land
And when Old Glory waves
I stand proud, I stand tall
I helped keep her flying over you, over all

🇺🇸 I AM A VETERAN 🇺🇸
