A new week means new possibilities!🌎🔥🌪️💧Welcome to “Nature’s Couture: Elemental Runway Fashion.” Understanding the star signs of Earth, Fire, Air, and Water, can deepen our connection with nature and ultimately ourselves. Being more mindful of these elements and how they relate to our own unique personality helps us to navigate whatever life may throw our way!

Earth symbolizes stability and grounding, while water represents flow, and purification. Air signifies intellect and freedom while fire represents passion and transformation. Engaging with these elements can ignite the creativity within these kids to reveal new perspectives and ideas that may not have been revealed before. Exploring these elements is also encouraging the children to make sustainable choices and advocate for a better environment. With planet care being a core value of Columbus Fashion Academy, learning this at a young age fosters an awareness and understanding of the impact we have on the world. 🌎

With color coded selections of pre loved fabrics to choose from for each sign, the children learned how to create a mood board, take measurements, pick and cut pattern designs, and take their imagination to new heights! 💫

We could not be more happy with how the start of this summers Columbus Fashion Academy has gone! We are so thankful for every little smiling face to walk through our doors, ready to let their creativity shine✨

This week brings us to “Thrift and Flip like a Fashion Entrepreneur” which is truly such an eye opening experience. The focus of this week is to design an entire outfit made completely from preloved fabrics and materials to be “sold” in their very own market by the end!

With planet care being one of our main core values, we hope to teach these kids that staying committed to using sustainable practices reduces the harm on our planet. Being 💭INTENTIONAL💭 with our clothing not only allows us to discover our true self, but it helps us discover what we truly LOVE. This leads to shopping less, wasting less, and ultimately reducing fast fashion. Dressing intentionally promotes mindfulness, helping us to make conscious decisions about consumption and sustainability. When you know your “why” you learn what makes you feel the most confident, and nothing can get in your way of following your dreams🌈

Today involved lots of brainstorming, picking fabrics and patterns, demonstrations and marketing tips from our wonderful staff and even some sewing!

💐Doll and Me Recap: FINAL DAY💐

We celebrated the last day of camp with a beautiful tea party filled with everything the children worked on throughout the week! They were treated to getting their hair and makeup done by our Columbus Fashion Academy interns to be fully immersed in the experience. The kids got to have their very own tea party with their dolls in the customized outfits during lunch time with real vintage china and delicious goodies!

Later in the afternoon the children invited friends and family to join in on the fun, showcasing their new hosting skills and etiquette. They all worked as a team to make traditional tea sandwiches, bake cookies, arrange beautiful center pieces.

Learning new things is vital for kids to grow and stay curious. At Columbus Fashion Academy, we strive to expand their horizons and empower them to positively influence their surrounds. Understanding fashion can cultivate an appreciation for different historical periods, cultures, force of self expression.

Fashion Lab Day Camp (Full Day session) — Columbus Fashion Academy Join us on July 9th for a celebration of Fashion Day with our much-anticipated Fashion Lab Days! Whether you’re an aspiring fashion artist or a seasoned creator, this event is perfect for you. Immerse yourself in a half-day or full day of creativity, learning, fun, and artistic freedom.

🫖Doll and Me Recap: DAY 3🫖

Day 3 of “Doll and Me” camp was all dedicated to our tea party preparations! Once the children finished up their final touches for their dolls designs and accessories, they got to learning all about proper tea party etiquette. They even had a mini sewing lesson and fell in love with it!

With 📚Education📚being another one of our core values, we wanted to teach the girls the profound role tea parties play in social gatherings and how to host their guests with hospitality. They were taught how to set a table, hold a tea cup, and even some history behind the Boston Tea Party. Not only did they gain the knowledge, but it gave them a deeper appreciation for their very own hard work they put forth. We are constantly striving to have children take these life lessons out into the world and make their own magic happen.

🎀Doll and Me Recap: DAY 2🎀

Day 2 was all about ACCESSORIES! Now that the most technical side of making their desired silhouette and design was done, the children were ready to jump into accessorizing feet first. One of the best parts about accessories is the complete freedom it provides to curate a look just for you. The kids were given the opportunity to pick from endless styles of headbands, sunglasses, and colorful beads to customize that turned into beautiful jewelry for them and their dolls. Some even made handbags from scratch by sewing different fabrics together!

So engaged in every detail of beading, jewel, and pattern, the kids had the best time expressing themselves and finding what makes them ✨shine✨. Discovering the parts of what make each and every one of us so special is something we focus on every day at Columbus Fashion Academy. We are all unique in our own way, and by learning that at such a young age, we are building self-awareness, developing self-love, creating a future of strong visionaries that can make this world a better place.

The kids learned new skills like using a hot glue gun for flat beading, stringing together their own jewelry, and creating their very own apron we put to great use later in the week! While these tasks taught them hands on techniques, our commitment to education goes so much deeper. 🌟Education and knowledge🌟is one of the greatest tools to utilize when it comes to fashion. When we learn what gives us that special sparkle, we can use fashion as our very own superpower. Fashion relates to everyone in one way or another, so understanding the impact it can have at a young age sets them up for success.

✨Doll and Me Recap: DAY 1✨

We kicked off day 1 of our “Doll and Me” camp with an incredible group of children, all eager to let their creativity shine. Each child was to bring their favorite doll/stuffed animal to design an entire outfit tailored to their imagination. The very first step we had them complete was to design a mood board consisting of any theme, color, object, or style they wanted to express in their dolls clothing. These mood boards truly set the tone for the entire week by giving them the ✨artistic freedom✨to express their true self.

Being one of our 4 core values, Artistic Freedom is highlighted in every aspect of what these children accomplished. This environment allowed them to thrive and kept them eager to learn more! The kids continued to pick and cut pre-loved fabrics they felt brought their mood boards to life. With the help of our excellent team of sewers, these kids watched their unique vision unfold right before their eyes.

We taught them how to take proper body measurements for their dolls just as you would for a person. Learning this at a young age cultivates a positive sense of self, because every body is different and beautiful in its own way!

Since creativity never stops here at the Columbus Fashion Academy, the kids were put to the test with some fashion challenges whilst waiting for their designs to be sewn! One of our leaders put together a game where each group is given a bag full of miscellaneous, pre loved accessories and clothing, to be turned into a full runway outfit as fast as possible! This hands on activity not only taught them the importance of teamwork, but gave them the confidence to try new things.

We are delighted to announce that Isabelle is joining us as a summer intern at the Columbus Fashion Academy! 🎉

Isabelle is a senior at The Ohio State University, pursuing a degree in Marketing with a minor in and Studies. She believes that fashion is the art we live our lives in, enabling us to express our true selves. Isabelle is passionate about helping children find their confidence and courage through fashion, fostering a sense of connectedness and community. During her interview, she mentioned a phrase we hear so often: "I wish this program existed when I was a kid!"

Join me on a journey of love, compassion, and unwavering friendship—a tale of Milena, a hero in every sense, and her extraordinary commitment to our cause.

For over 40 years, Milena has been my rock, my confidante, my guiding light. She's not just a friend; she's family—a true embodiment of our values. Recently, she and her family moved from Brazil to Canada (we are like neighbors now).

When our event called for support, Milena didn't hesitate. Despite the distance and challenges, she, along with her husband and child, embarked on an epic journey from Toronto to Columbus—a testament to her determination and dedication.

Driving for 8 hours straight on Saturday, with only four hours of sleep, and working another 8 hours on Sunday at our "Art Gallery and Fashion Show" at the Columbus Museum of Art—Milena's commitment knew no bounds. With a frozen shoulder, she poured her heart and soul into every moment, every detail, every smile.

As she stood amidst the chaos and beauty of our event, I felt overwhelming gratitude. Gratitude for her unwavering support, her selflessness, her belief in our mission at the Columbus Fashion Academy.

Milena's journey wasn't just about attending an event; it was about experiencing firsthand the impact of our work, the lives we touch, the hearts we inspire. It was about connecting with our values on a deeper level, embodying the spirit of compassion and humanity that defines us.

Here's to Milena Mitsuishi, my hero, my inspiration. Thank you for reminding us of the power of friendship, love, compassion and community. May we all be so fortunate to have a friend like Milena—a friend who supports, believes, and uplifts us. And may we never forget the profound impact of kindness and compassion on the world around us.

What you might not know is that many of these beautiful people are amazing artists beyond the classrooms. They are painters, sculptors, photographers, videographers, musicians, makeup artists, jewelry artists etc.

This May, we're excited to share the talents of our afterschool program instructors and special events volunteers. Join us for an eye-opening exhibition featuring our team at the new luxboheme Gallery (former Vanderelli room) on May 10th from 6-9 PM during Franklinton Fridays, with additional opportunities to explore their art over the weekend from 11 AM to 2 PM.

These are not just the dedicated fashion designers and art instructors you see helping in the classrooms; they are incredible givers, amazing people in so many levels, some award-winning artists whose works captivate audiences around the world too. Their creativity and landing hand support our children’s fashion dreams.

We just hosted the 1st Mend in Public Day, and I couldn't be more grateful for the experience. It was such a serene and joyful day, filled with the fashion community coming together to give their cherished clothes a new lease on life. We mended everything from pants and sweaters to socks, t-shirts, and even leather bag straps. Each repair not only added to the garment’s story but also helped keep it out of the landfill. It was truly inspiring to see so much love and care in action. Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared in the simple joy of making fashion sustainable. At our recent event, Akada's talented team styled the hair of 103 kids, bringing creativity and flair to each look, contributing to a memorable runway experience. If you've ever visited Akada, you know just how exceptional their service and artistry are.
