EXPECTATIONS VS REALITY
There are many states that are now or have been doing great things in preparing formerly incarcerated individuals for successful re-entry, but even with all the preparation expectations can and will fall flat from time to time. Reality sometimes has a way of reminding us. So what are some of the expectations that meet reality face to face? Carrie Heck with the Hoosier Initiative for Re-Entry will share her decades of re-entry experience to the table.
HIRE INDIANA TESTIMONY (Part 1 of 2)
The Hoosier Initiative for Re-Entry (HIRE) program was created in 2012 by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) to help people with past involvement with the legal system reintegrate into society and to create career paths to give them the opportunities to improve their lives in a sustainable way.
Jason was one of the first clients in this program when it was being birthed. He participated while incarcerated at Branchville Correctional Facility.

So you are home. You’ve been away for a while. You either had regular communication and visits from family or you were completely disconnected. Either way reunification with family can be difficult.
So your husband, wife, son, daughter, brother or sister is coming home they’ve been gone awhile. You are nervous, filled with anxiety and unsure what to do. You want to be supportive but how. Maybe you are concerned about old behaviors.
My name is Jason Hochstedler, 10 years ago I had to start walking this journey after more than 5 years away. For me my family was disconnected. I had burned bridges and built a lot of mistrust. I am now a successful member of society and president of Living Proof Project. Let’s be real, let’s be authentic. Let’s talk about the tough stuff.
