The Doctors Lane were served some post workout "Collagen Water" on their weekend getaway... so what's the deal with collagen supplements!?

Dr. Tanda Lane shares her thoughts:

"Oral collagen supplementation. Does it work?? We know that, the first thing that happens after ingestion is denaturation and hydrolysis of the triple helix structure of collagen by stomach acids. However…. Let’s look at the individual parts after the break down occurs. Collagen is broken down into di and tripeptides as well as individual amino acids, particularly hydoxyproline. In addition to being able to absorb individual amino acids, the GI tract has peptide transporters to absorb even partially broken-down peptide chains. So, while we don’t absorb the collagen, the hydrolyzed pieces can be absorbed and then reassembled where they’re needed in the skin, nails, muscles and joints. Hydrolyzed collagen supplements or supplements that mimic collagen building blocks, rich in Pro-Hyp (Prolyl-hydroxyproline) and Hyp-Gly (hydroxyprolyl-glycine) dipeptides can lead to VERY SUBTLE but likely visible improvements in hydration and elasticity. So, while "collagen water" is mostly marketing genius, and doesn't replace the need for a meticulous skin care regimen and sun protection, there is a bit of science to support the addition of a collagen supplement to your regimen!"

Dr. McTighe is a U.S. Army Major and Flight Surgeon, and when not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Kristen and their four beautiful children. Welcome! 🥳
