Weekly Update: This week is Lightning Safety Week and Motorcycle Ohio is looking for riders who want to become instructors.

Summer can be a great time of year to play sports, enjoy family picnics, or take a stroll through a neighborhood park; but it can also bring excessive heat that may make your summertime fun take a dangerous turn, we spoke to the Ohio Emergency Management Agency on tips to stay safe during and congratulations to the eleventh Public Safety Leadership Academy class, which graduated after 11 weeks of accredited, college-level training through a partnership with The Ohio State University John Glenn College of Public Affairs.

The Hilltop kicked off a safe summer with the Hilltop Summer Safety Bash a free event for students, youth and families in the Columbus area, brought to you by the Ohio School Safety Center and the Department of Public Safety and The Ohio Traffic Safety Office is partnering with Students Against Destructive Decisions, The Ohio State University, and The Ohio School Resource Officers Association to implement a new program to educate students and families about the importance of wearing a seat belt and using a booster seat.

Weekly Update: Motorcycle Ohio presented two “Saved by the Helmet” awards at the Chillicothe Paints game at VA Memorial Stadium and the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center Executive Director Cynthia Peterman and Erin Reed, Public Safety Assistant Policy Director in the Governor’s Office, hosted a breakout session, “Knowledge is Power - Rapid Intelligence Sharing as a Public Priority” at the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities, Mental Health and Addiction Conference.

The 2024 ONIC Law Enforcement Drug Summit opened May 29 with DPS Director Andy Wilson, who thanked attendees for their service to their communities, and for keeping Ohioans safe and ODPS kicked off its summer internship’s experimental learning series this week with a fun and educational “amazing race” style day for the college interns working at the department this summer.

The Ohio Traffic Safety Office is partnering with three advanced teen driving schools to provide some free hands on training, while the Ohio Department of Public safety and Lawrence County Sheriff's Office team up for an Operation BRIDGE event.

The Ohio Traffic Safety Council met this week and Ohio School Safety Center team members worked with the Department of Homeland Security to present a Threat Evaluation and Reporting Overview course to Summit County police chiefs, school resource officers, and school superintendents.

Recently, reinstatement teams with the Ohio BMV joined the Operation BRIDGE event in Ross County to help walk people through the process of getting their licenses reinstated and another BRIDGE event was held in Middletown this week.

This week Director Wilson spoke at the 2024 Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame and Fire Awards Ceremony and BMV employees helped assist 25 customers at the Ravenna Re-entry fair for Ohio Means Jobs in Portage County.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced nearly $2.5 million in grants to expand access to teen driver training for low-income Ohio families and this week was National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and we want to thank our public safety telecommunicators for their commitment, service, and sacrifice.

April 8th was the long-awaited solar eclipse and Governor DeWine delivered his state of the state address this week.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined representatives from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Ohio Department of Transportation to talk about preparations for the total solar eclipse next Monday and\ Ohio School Safety Center team members Steve Reynolds and Brian Wical, fielded questions during the Montgomery County Crime Prevention meeting.

This week, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order establishing a statewide program to recognize law enforcement agencies that voluntarily meet or exceed Ohio’s new standards for professional excellence and as part of Women’s History Month, Staff Lieutenant Tiffiany Meeks gave the keynote speech for the Girl’s Mentorship Breakfast at Mechanicsburg High School.

This week, several state agencies, including Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, discussed plans and offered tips to those traveling to see the total eclipse in Ohio and twelve K9 officers graduated from the Patrol's K9 Officer Training Program.

This week, ONIC offices in Cleveland, Toledo, and Cincinnati recently worked with Ohio School Safety staff to obtain their CPR/AED and First Aid certifications and the Ohio School Safety Center and Ohio Traffic Safety Office are inviting Ohio students in grades 9-12 to participate in a school bus safety video PSA contest as part of the #SafeStreetsSafeSchools campaign.

This week, a severe weather system prompted watches and warning across the state. What can you do to be ready for severe weather? And, the Ohio School Safety Center’s Chris Skinner presented the School-Based Response to Active Threat Incidents at the City Day Community School in Dayton.
