15 Cool Facts About Breastfeeding

1. Human milk boosts a baby’s immune system big time—helping baby fight viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections, including:
Respiratory tract infections
Ear infections
Bacterial meningitis
Pneumonia
Urinary tract infections
Infant diarrhea
Common colds and flus

2. Breastfeeding can actually reduce baby’s risk of disease later in life, including:
Type I and II diabetes
Hodgkin’s disease
Leukemia
Obesity
High blood pressure
High cholesterol levels
Crohn’s disease
Ulcerative colitis
Asthma
Eczema

3. Breastfeeding reduces mama’s risk of ovarian and breast cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. The longer she breastfeeds, the higher the benefit. In fact, a woman who breastfeeds for 8 years has nearly a 0% risk of breast cancer.

Get this—breastfeeding a baby girl actually reduces her lifetime risk of breast cancer by 25%.

4. Breastfeeding saves a family approximately $2 to 4 thousand dollars annually (compared to cost of formula).

5. Breastfeeding helps mama heal faster in the postpartum, helping her uterus return to pre-pregnancy size faster and lowering overall postpartum blood loss.

6. Breastfeeding can help mama return to her pre-baby weight. It takes 1000 calories a day on average to produce breast milk. Women are advised to consume an extra 500 calories a day, and the body dips into reserves it built up in pregnancy to make the rest (it’s important to consume those extra calories or the body actually goes into “starvation mode” and holds onto the reserves).

7. Producing breast milk consumes 25% of the body’s energy; the brain only uses 20% by comparison.

8. On average, babies remove 67% of the milk mama has available—they eat until fullness, not until the breast is emptied.

9. Almost 75% of all moms produce more milk in their right breast, whether they are right- or left- handed.

10. Mama’s body is constantly making the perfect milk for baby. Milk changes its nutritional profile as baby grows (milk made for a 3 month old is different than for a 9 month old). Milk can even change day to day—for example, water content may increase during times of hot weather and baby-sickness to provide extra hydration.

11. Human milk contains substances that promote sleep and calmness in babies (who doesn’t love that?) Breastfeeding also calms mama and helps her bond to baby.

12. Breastfed infants are at lower risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

13. Mama’s breasts can detect even a one degree fluctuation in baby’s body temperature and adjust accordingly to heat up or cool down baby as needed. This is one reason skin-to-skin contact in the early days is so crucial.

14. Breastfeeding reduces baby’s risk of cavities later on and may lower the chance they will need braces as kids.

15. Breastfeeding mamas sleep on average 45 minutes more a night, compared to those who formula feed.

The left is the appropriate amount of a feed for a newborn on day one. Do NOT let the right fool you. You're not starving your child

EDIT: please read. R E A D. Day one. One feed. This is not formula vs breastmilk. If your child took more then 5/7/10 ml per feed on day one, willingly thats great! If on day one your breastfed infant got 5 ML, great. This is not the case of starvation. This post does not address actual starvation it’s about stomach volume. The comments went entirely out of control and will soon be turned off

There is a wide range of healthy!

If your baby is satiated, has plenty of wet and soiled diapers, is on a growth curve, is developing, then don’t worry about their size.

Repost

They are two healthy babies, three months old, both exclusively breastfeeding and, believe me, neither the one on the left is obese, nor the one on the right is undernourished. They are variations of normality! Most likely, when they start crawling, the one on the left will slim down a little and the one on the right will gain muscle mass.
Do not compare your child to other children.
Each of us is different.

MILK SHARING CHALLENGE. ‘Tis the season of giving - but it’s more than that. There is no giving without receiving! 🎁
I love this statement by LLL: “Milk-sharing is a special relationship that can require much thought and effort. The aim is to support the health of the baby, enhance the relationships between all the participants and share the love inherent in the act of breastfeeding and chestfeeding.”
Did you GIVE milk? Did you RECEIVE milk? Share in the comments! ❤️❤️
Better yet? Join in the challenge - now until Dec 23, post this part of your journey with the hashtag ! 🥰
There is more info and some swipe up links for how to donate or how to use donated milk in my story highlight called “Milk Sharing” at .dietitian along with many posts from my colleagues this week:nutrition lactation

Let’s talk about engorgement. 😞The information online can be overwhelming: heat, cold, massage, pump and etc. 😲 Engorgement is swelling or fluid overload. There are different fluids inside the breast!!! Not just milk!! Be mindful about three principles: Movement, Flow and Kindness. Move the breast by doing Breast Gymnastics: gentle stretch moving the breast up,down, side to side and circling all around in both directions. Flow: gentle therapeutic breast massage following the flow of the fluid you want to move. Lymph is flowing up toward lymph nodes in armpit and other up and milk is flowing down. Nurse your baby and/or hand express milk for comfort. Please, be Kind to your breast and to yourself. No pushing or squeezing the breast tissue. Cold compresses can help with swelling. Get comfortable! Stretch your neck and shoulders. Be gentle, go with the flow, you’ve got it!!❤️🤱🏿🤱🏻🤱

As a woman who wears her hair short and who over the years has had to “audition” several barbers (and barber shops) before committing, I appreciate this photo and this barber’s caption. ..because the brothas be too 💁🏽‍♂️

Grooming the Nurturers ⁣

( Back Story ) ⁣

Nicolette came in for a haircut and her husband sat in the lounge with their baby. He was crying a lot and I asked his mother what is wrong. She replied that he was hungry and needed to be breastfed. ⁣

I had already completed the haircut and was about to add the lines. I assured her that it was okay to take care of her son. She smiled and her husband laughed as he carried him into the room. ⁣

This photo addresses two things that women are constantly criticized for, cutting their hair off and breastfeeding. ⁣

It is time that we embrace what is beautiful and natural. ⁣Women should be able to breastfeed without fear. ⁣

•The pelvis and all it’s Glory!!! Let’s talk about it ✨

•After supporting a growing baby for 9 months your pelvis knows when the time is right, and when it’s ready it opens up to allow baby to pass through during birth.

•We see the pelvis as a hard bone structure that is completely immobile BUT that’s not the case.

•The pelvis is very complex. It’s made up of four bones & these four bones are held tightly together by what’s called connective tissue, ligaments and cartilage and all together these things help the pelvis to move.

•During labor we have a hormone called relaxin release into our body and that has a very big job. That hormone makes the cartilage, connective tissue and ligaments become stretchy like rubber! All of that plays into the bones movement allowing baby to pass through the pelvis.

•During labor we want our pelvis as open as possible to avoid baby getting stuck which can quickly turn into a C section situation If the proper positions aren’t done to help assist baby out.

•Did you know you don’t have to give birth on your back? Most hospitals make you think it’s the only way to birth your baby and say it’s part of their policy because they don’t want you out of the bed BUT giving birth squatting or on hands and knees just to name a couple positions open your pelvis up a lot more than laying on your back! These positions can be done in the bed if needed!

Know your options and what those options can do for you to help progress and have a smooth Birth experience 🖤
