New Church Year begins on September 1st
Since pagan times, the civil year has begun on January 1st, the month named for the pagan god Janus. The First Ecumenical Council that took place in Nicaea in the year 325 decreed that the Church year should begin on September 1st. The month of September was, for the Hebrews, the beginning of the civil year (Exodus 23:16), the month of gathering the harvest and of the offering of thanks to God.
It was on this feast that the Lord Jesus entered the synagogue in Nazareth (Luke 4:16-21), opened the book of the Prophet Isaiah and read the words: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me; because the Lord hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn (Isaiah 61:1-2).
The month of September is also important in the history of Christianity, because Emperor Constantine the Great was victorious over Maxentius, the enemy of the Christian Faith, in September. Following this victory, Constantine granted freedom of confession to the Christian Faith throughout the Roman Empire. For a long time, the civil year in the Christian world followed the Church year, with its beginning on the first day of September. In the early days of the Church and the Christian Roman Empire, major decisions and policies were announced on this day. The New Year in the Latin Church is always on the first Sunday of Advent (the Philip’s - Christmas Fast).
As we begin this new Church year we pray: Creator of the universe, setting times and seasons by Your sole authority, bless the cycle of the year of Your grace, O Lord, guarding our rulers and Your nation in peace, at the intercession of the Theotokos, and save us.
Reminder: Great Vespers tonight at 7:00 p.m. Come and pray with us!

August 1 begins the Dormition Fast in our Melkite Catholic Church. This particular fasting season is only 2 weeks long (ending on the Feast of the Dormition, August 15) but is a wonderful time for us to prepare ourselves to celebrate the Feast of the Dormition through prayer, fasting, and the reception of the Holy Mystery of Repentance. This feast is very important for Catholics because it shows us that we, like the Theotokos, are given the opportunity after death to be resurrected, body and soul, and live forever in the presence of the Most Holy Trinity. The Church encourages you to participate this year in the Dormition Fast to grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ.
Dear Faithful of Holy Resurrection Parish,
Christ is among us!
Indeed, Christ is and will always be among us, thanks to the Church and the Priesthood He established to pour forth His blessings and nourish us with His Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist. Thanks be to God for the gift of the Priesthood, and in particular for Fr. Ignatius Harrington's priestly ministry to Holy Resurrection Parish. For the last 32 years, Fr. Ignatius has stood before this Altar, bringing our prayers to God and giving us the blessing and Gifts of God, most especially the Body and Blood of Christ. I can truly say that Fr. Ignatius has blessed us with his ministry, because I have been blessed for so many years of my life and especially throughout my time in the seminary to attend Holy Resurrection Parish and to be nourished by Fr. Ignatius's teaching and preaching. It was Fr. Ignatius who allowed me to begin assisting at the Liturgy as a server, and who would eventually teach me how to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. I bet he never expected then that he was training his successor! I am honored to follow him, but I know that I have big shoes to fill. However, I also know that with your prayers and support and the guidance of Almighty God, we will continue the great legacy Fr. Ignatius leaves behind here in Columbus. Fr. Ignatius, thank you for 32 years of faithful Priestly ministry to our community, be assured of our continued prayers for you, especially at this Altar, and please continue to pray for all of us. May God grant you many blessed years in peace, health and happiness!
In Christ our God,
Abouna Tyler Carter
