Elder's Meditation of the Day—July 2

"If I destroy you, I destroy myself. If I honor you, I honor myself."

—Hunbatz Men, MAYAN

It is said, when we need love the most is when we deserve it the least. Whenever I have secret thoughts about someone else, it will put bad feelings inside myself. I will hurt myself. If I secretly hold a grudge or resentment against my brother or sister, I will be a slave to that person until I let them go. Let me remember to look at my brother in a sacred manner. Today, let my thoughts toward my brothers and sisters be good thoughts.

Creator, take my hand and guide me through today. Let me remember that You are in charge. If I get upset at another person today, let me remember that the most important thing I can do is to first talk to You. When I am right with You, it is impossible to be out of harmony with my brothers and sisters.

At the time when the Haudenosaunee People came together to ratify the Great Peace, there was a total eclipse that darkened the skies so deeply that the nocturnal animals woke to encircle and witness the calm of the humans who unified under the Great White Pine. As Father Sun re-emerged from behind Grandmother Moon, all were awakened with a new sense of unity and peace.

Again, this sacred encounter between Father Sun, Grandmother Moon, and Mother Earth is taking place. Let us be still… Let us be quiet… Let us be reminded during this sacred moment in time of the Great Peace of the Haudenosaunee People… Let us pray together for healing, unity, and peace… ☀️🌕🌎

The capital improvement funding received from the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and The Columbus Foundation for the NAICCO Renovation Project, both simultaneously helped significantly transform the interior of the NAICCO agency building. Starting just after the turn of the year, the interior of the NAICCO agency building underwent a very thorough and transformative overhaul. The interior renovations to the NAICCO agency building by way of this project include:

• All walls and doors painted on both the first floor and the top floor
• All ceiling tiles replaced on the first floor and the top floor
• All fluorescent ballasts replaced on all three floors (including basement) with new LED flat panel light fixtures
• Circuit panel replaced on the first floor with a larger one

Because of this project the inside of our NAICCO building looks incredible, is much safer and sound, and will assuredly help bring about a sense of pride among our Native American community who looks to this building as their home here in Ohio.

Appreciatively,

2024 Land Back NAICCO Priorities

Marking the end of January 2024 Land Back NAICCO now stands at a staggering $318,490! This point in time could not have happened without all the love and support from everyone out there who made the choice to step up and champion NAICCO’s important mission and vision work here in Ohio. To all of you who helped bring Land Back NAICCO this far, take pride in knowing that your contribution has only brought us that much closer to the realization of this long sought after dream.

Because of this momentum, we have begun to seriously start looking at properties in the Central Ohio area. Our plan is to identify and purchase land for NAICCO Nation in the very foreseeable future. We have our sights strongly set on 2024 to make this happen.

Going forward, the highest priority for Land Back NAICCO in 2024 will undoubtedly be to identify and purchase land in Central Ohio. If this mark cannot be hit, then the second priority for 2024 will be for Land Back NAICCO to reach $400,000. Either way, your continued support will only strengthen our position to attain the best piece of property possible.

As we journey this path, we must remain diligent and mindful in all of our decision making. What we do here today by way of Land Back NAICCO is going to impact many generations to come. With that in mind, we thank you for your love and support, and for strengthening our path going forward in writing this new, successful chapter in Native American history here in Ohio.

NAICCO’s 2024 Good News & Bad News

Recently, NAICCO was fortunate enough to be granted capital funding by both the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and The Columbus Foundation, thus to renovate the interior of the NAICCO agency building—upgrade electric, replace lights and ceiling tiles, and add a new coat of paint. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity that both of these funding sources have made possible for both NAICCO and NAICCO Nation, as this has been something we have been longing to do for quite some time.

The bad news that goes along with this good news is that NAICCO Cuisine will not be operational during the down time associated to this renovation project. Meaning, we will not be offing any NAICCO Cuisine intertribal monthly platters during the months of both January and February.

Continue to follow NAICCO’s social media platforms to stay up to date on the future developments of the renovation project and NAICCO Cuisine’s 2024 plans.

Happy New Year from all of us here at NAICCO!

In the Northwest, the Chiawana Tanan (River People) celebrate Indian New Year during the time of the winter solstice. The celebration is called kimtee inmewit. It goes back to when the world was new. During this time the first food that was created was usux, the salmon. The second food was nukt, the deer. The third was sliiton, the bitter root. And too, came the other foods that followed… These foods come back to the Chiawana Tanan each year as the sunlight begins to stretch again. Indian New Year is the time to celebrate the return of these sacred foods. To honor this sacred time of year the Chiawana Tanan sing, drum, dance, pray, and share a meal together in their tribal longhouses.

WHEREAS, Native American Heritage Month was first recognized in 1990 through a joint resolution ratified by President George H.W. WHEREAS, as of October 2023, the United States is home to over 2.2 million Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, with the U.S. Census estimating that roughly 35,000 Native Americans and Alaska Natives are living within Ohio; and,

WHEREAS, the Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio (NAICCO) was founded in 1975 by Selma Sully-Walker, a member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, to create a home for Native Americans living within Central Ohio; and,

WHEREAS, NAICCO’s mission is to preserve and restore balance in the lives of Native Americans through traditional, cultural, educational, family, community, and wellness driven values and initiatives; and,

WHEREAS, to accomplish this mission, NAICCO has developed two flagship programs: NAICCO Cuisine, a program promoting Native American cuisines, and Land Back NAICCO, an effort to purchase a permanent home for the NAICCO community; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby celebrates Native American Heritage Month and recognizes and appreciates the work and contributions of NAICCO, calling for all residents to honor this occasion with the appropriate educational and advocacy efforts.

Native Lives Matter

The Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio (NAICCO), like many others, has taken full notice of what is going on around us during these trying times. In looking around, we see the unrest and tension that’s looming in the air. We see the strong influence that the Black Nation has had on this country, and the newfound consciousness they have awakened. We also see the strong stances that have been brought forth concerning indifference, injustice, and the need for basic societal change. We see all of this, through Native eyes, for we can identify with the origins of these deep-rooted issues that date back some hundreds of years.

As Native people, there is no doubt that 500 plus years of Western colonialization has dramatically impacted our life ways. For us, this is not just an undeniable truth, but also a reality we must live with on a daily basis. All we need to do is take a look around to be instantly reminded of what has happened to our people and ancestral homelands over this time period. Because of this, is exactly why NAICCO exists today, and still stands as strong as it does.

Many of the issues and concerns we deal with on a regular basis at NAICCO derive from hundreds of years of historical and intergenerational traumas. We don’t agree with how things turned out for our people, and at the same time we know that we cannot go back and undo history. What we can be sure of though, is that we have a choice in matters when it comes to positively impacting our people’s lives in this day and age so they have a real chance at achieving a brighter future. With that said, know that we have been busy doing just that at NAICCO. Not only have we made this choice, but we’ve taken the action necessary to make a number of bold steps forward over the past several years. We see and support our relatives out there on the frontlines fighting for the removal and replacement of insensitive insignias, names, and other monikers, but for us, this is not an area we can afford to prioritize at this time. In order to make a real difference in our Native people’s lives we must continue forward with our mission work, and with our sights set on accomplishing bigger and better results than those we have already come to realize at NAICCO. For us to break stride at this point would be a complete disservice to our people and all that we have accomplished to date.

The testimony to our most recent accomplishments has been built upon that of three consecutive projects (spanning over nine years), with each complimenting the foundation laid forth by the one prior. Currently, we are getting ready to launch the opening of NAICCO Cuisine, or what will better be known as an authentic Native American food trailer in Ohio. Notably, this isn’t simply an initiative to develop a self-sustaining means for ensuring future, culturally congruent programming for our people, but just as importantly, this will be another foundational step closer to the establishment of a bigger and better NAICCO. Meaning, through all of our mission work and visioning as a community, we have been set on a course to purchase and possess a land base of our own here in Central Ohio. Though we are getting closer to achieving this goal, we still have a ways to go. On that note, we would like to ask all our friends, allies, supporters, and other stakeholders to respect our time and efforts, and reflect on the importance of our work here in Ohio.
