Statement Concerning the Attempted Assassination
of Former President Donald J. Trump

On behalf of the 18 denominations that comprise the Ohio Council of Churches, I write to express condemnation of the firearm-related assassination attempt that injured Former President Donald J. Trump, claimed the life of a spectator, and injured two others during a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

We believe all people, regardless of party or perspective, must be able to express their political ideas without fear of violence or intimidation. It is abundantly clear to us that violence has no legitimate place in the realms of political discourse and in our society itself.

Mr. Trump, the family of the slain spectator, the injured, and the family of the shooter will be in our prayers.

With Hope,

Jack

The Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan, Jr.

But let justice roll down like water
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Amos 5:24 NRSVUE
Dear Friend,

On this day, Juneteenth, 159 years ago, the long-awaited message of liberation finally reached enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas, some 2 1/2 years after the publishing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Without a doubt, this is a day of celebration for African Americans and people of goodwill everywhere.

Even with hearts full of joy, we cannot help but lament over the brutal systems of slavery and racial discrimination terror that claimed lives and impacted systems and practices across our land. We lament over what and who we could have been as a nation had these evils not been part of our history.

On June 17 our nation paused to mark the 9th anniversary of the murders of nine African Americans at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Charleston, SC, who were gunned down by a young white man full of racial hate. Our hearts continue to ache over these acts of domestic terror and other forms of racial violence.

Juneteenth gives us all an opportunity to think creatively about ways we can strengthen our collaborative efforts to detect, disrupt, and dismantle racism in all of its forms while insisting that policies calling for diversity, equity, and inclusion be upheld, honored, and emboldened.

The work to dismantle racism is sacred, holy work, as informed by the liberating ministry of Jesus Christ. Every human being has been created in God's image. This non-negotiable truth is one that we all share and one we all must guard.

Happy Juneteenth to you, my friend.

With Hope,
Jack

The Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan, Jr.
Executive Director
