St Nicholas Day!

There is no more beloved saint, among Orthodox Christians or throughout the world, than St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. He was not a bishop in an important see; he left behind no writings, no theological legacy; he did not compose an anaphora; he did not travel as a missionary, found a new local church, build a great cathedral, or start an important monastery. What he did do, and does do, is reveal in his works the very love of Jesus Christ. Like his Master, he frees prisoners, saves from storms, and gives generously. He does these things as they relate to the body, but also as they relate to the soul.

Holy hierarch, father Nicholas, pray to God for us, so that we might be delivered from every bodily danger and want and also set free from the prison of passion, saved from the storm of this age, and made worthy to receive, by no worthiness of ours, the immeasurably generous gift of the Lord: eternal fellowship and a place in the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to Thy name, O Most High” (Ps 91/92:1).

Today, the holy Maiden enters into the temple of the Old Law, and all the shadowy symbols of the ancient covenant—the jar, the staff, the golden censer, the ark with the cherubim—are fulfilled. “Today is the prelude of the good will of God, of the preaching of the salvation of mankind. The Virgin appears in the temple of God, in anticipation proclaiming Christ to all.” As she takes up residence in the holy of holies, the Virgin Mary activates the dead letter of the Mosaic Law: it is now a living word, proclaiming the coming of Christ, who enters the world through the Theotokos, she who is the true meaning of the scriptures, the true meaning of the world. In the words of St. Gregory Palamas, “she alone is the frontier between created and uncreated nature. . . . . She is the cause of the benefits which preceded her . . . and through her those good things which are eternal shall be received. She is the theme of the prophets, the first of the apostles.”

Nativity Fast (Nov 15 new calendar) begins today. Blessed Advent!

Today the Nativity Fast begins, a fast barely noted in the divine services. This fast is quiet, in some sense “dark,” reminding us of the darkness in which the world lay before Christ’s birth, and of the dark, still night on which God was born as a man. Entering this season with a humble stillness of spirit, we, too, await the coming of God.

About our Metropolitan’s namesday and guidance about our own Patron Saints. St Tikhon and holy saints pray to God for us!

Joyous feast! It is my pleasure to greet all of you on my name day, the feast of St. Tikhon of Moscow, my heavenly patron and intercessor. St. Tikhon is my patron, but most Orthodox Christians have their own patron saint, usually a saint whose name we share and who takes on a special role in interceding for our well-being and salvation before the throne of God. We should all diligently study the lives of our patron saints and pray daily, more than daily, even hourly, for their help and protection. We would do well to memorize this brief prayer from the Morning Prayers and recite it throughout our day: “Pray to God for me, O holy [name of your patron saint], pleasing to God, for with fervor I run to thee, swift helper and intercessor for my soul.”

Protection of the Theotokos Feast Day and Church Musician Sunday (Oct 1)

Today, as we celebrate the protection of the most holy Mother of God, we also celebrate Saint Romanus, who adorned the patrimony of the Church with so many songs in honor of her and her divine Son, Jesus Christ the God-man. But there is no song without singers, and accordingly, in the Orthodox Church in America, the Holy Synod of Bishops and I have designated this Sunday "Church Musician Sunday." So that the songs of Saint Romanus and all the holy hymnographers may continue to resound to the glory of God until the end of time, all of us are called to work together in learning and preserving the fullness of the Church's liturgy and in fostering vocations in the realm of ecclesiastical music: vocations such as singer, choir director, ecclesiarch and typicarist, liturgical composer, hymnologist, and hymnographer. Through the mediation of the most holy Theotokos and the prayers of Saint Romanus and the synaxis of the holy hymnographers, may liturgical song flourish in our communities, now and for many years to come.
