William L. Walker, 80, went home to be with the Lord on July 21, 2023.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL with Rev. Randy Comer officiating. Interment with full military honors will immediately follow the service at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.

The nation has lost another soldier from the Vietnam war. Sergeant First Class (ret.) William L. Walker passed away on this date, July 21, 2023 after declining health from injuries sustained in an accidental fall.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in an artillery unit with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He also volunteered for extra duty as a door-gunner on a Huey for the hazard pay to support his family. He served one tour which included the Tet Offensive.

He continued to serve for a total of 23 years at multiple postings as a Motor Pool Sergeant and a training supervisor at the Bradley Fighting Vehicle Training Center in Germany. He married Annie Mae Walker in 1970 and loved her with all his heart until the last. She followed him from post to post, taking care of the home and him, and they were inseparable. After retiring in 1988 he went to work for the City of Fort Worth as a mechanic.

He loved to work with wood, go fishing, tinkering around the house and, as always, was a great cook. He was greatly loved and will be missed.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Walker; parents, Claude and Wilma Walker; and his daughter, Kathy Lynn Stuart.

He is survived by two sons, William L. Walker, Jr., and wife, Carol, Bobby Walker and wife, Cheryl; four daughters, Cathy Brugger and husband, Tim, Lorraine Berdeaux and husband, James, Margie Shelton, and Marie White and husband, David; 24 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons; sister, Margie Sue James and husband, Lynn; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
