We are honored to have hosted the famed Ann B. Walker on our main campus in honor of . A sharp and captivating speaker at 100 years old, Ann was the first woman television broadcaster in Columbus and the first Black woman from Franklin County to receive a presidential appointment. She attended Prairie View A&M University on a tennis scholarship in 1940 (where she first learned of Juneteenth). She talked and answered questions from a large group of Battelle employees who were gathered by our employee resource group AABLE, African American & Black Leadership Excellence. The talk was moderated by Battelle's Director of Corporate Engagement and Educational Outreach Regina Schofield, with opening remarks from President and CEO Lou Von Thaer.

Millipede alert!
The National Ecological Observatory Network does amazing work collecting data so scientists can do more research. We're proud to operate NEON for the National Science Foundation (NSF)
POV: You are a millipede trekking through Alabama woodlands.
During the summer it's not unusual to come across giant millipedes, likely Narceus americanus, at field sites in Domain 08. Their large size can be startling, reaching up to 4 inches in length, but if threatened they may curl up in a defensive position and secrete a noxious liquid. It's best to observe from a distance and let them carry out their important role as detritivores (they feed on dead organic material) in the ecosystem. 🍂
