What do you call them: manicules, indexes, printer’s fist, or pointers? I just like making them for letterpress printers. They're available in my online store in pairs at 12 and 8 line.
Manicules, Indexes, Printer’s Fist, or Pointers | MOORE WOOD TYPE One of the prize finds on E-Bay or in an antique shop is a Manicule. That is the historic name for what some people call a “Printer’s Fist”, a “Pointer”, or an “Index”. They have been cast in hot metal for hundreds of years, and pantograph cut in hard maple starting around 1835. The wood type versio...
My friend Bob Kelemen creates the neatest letterpress posters for my wood type workshops at Kent State and Akron where he teaches, this one got into the Hamilton New Impressions exhibition! Do you see the resemblance?
New Impressions Spotlight: "Type Artiste" by Bob Kelemen. Bob is a Cleveland-based graphic designer and artist specializing in letterpress printing. He has a special interest in letterpress printing, teaching workshops and classes as well as and running his own letterpress studio, Black Walnut Letterpress, in his backyard barn. His personal letterpress work ranges from traditional to experimental. Bob’s prints frequently combine vintage wood and metal typography with found objects, such as game pieces, dice, dominoes, Lego building blocks, vinyl record albums, saw blades and wood scraps. Music and a sense of humor play key roles in his work.
Been focused on learning how to use my new laser cutter, here's a William Page Shaded Star that engrave on the laser to replicate hand engraving http://moorewoodtype.com/2015/07/william-page-shaded-stars/
William Page Shaded Stars | MOORE WOOD TYPE One of the best parts of having a daughter who is a printer and educator is that she always keeps an eye out for new wood type ideas that other printers would like. During the Amalgamated Printers’ Association 2015 Chicago Wayzgoose Erin went to spend the afternoon at the Newberry Library. While loo…

Most of the people who will be interviewed, IF IT IS FUNDED, are my friends and members of the MWT Advisory Committee. They have helped me to be able to cut wood type. They are free with good advise…

More great news from Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum and there's the wood type DDC logo that I lasercut for Aaron Draplin this past Summer on one of the Field Notes. And a MWT Wisconsin too!
The Portland Project - Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum Good things take time. Back in September of 2011, my good friend and Hamilton Artistic Board member, Nick Sherman came to me with a proposal. Via email, he introduced me to his friend Jim Coudal of Field Notes with the idea of having us print a note book for them. I loved the idea but was daunted by…
A true craftsmen and carpenter helping Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum, how great!
The Idea of Building 18 Display Cabinets - Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum I was looking at Wisconsin sites on the web and found one about interesting places to see around Manitowoc. I never heard of wood type and the history of that industry, so I looked at the Hamilton site and recorded the address. A year later I looked again and the museum was moving. They had work wee…

Spanish Pipedream Two color print 12.5" x 22" One of my favorite musicians is the legendary John Prine. This quote is from his song Spanish Pipedream. It always seemed like a good motto to have. This print would be a good gift or perfect hanging in your own country kitchen.

friend Matt of Virgin Wood Type wrote a kind, wonderful synopsis of my history as a type cutter and about his visit to my shop — letterpress people (especially wood type ones) are the greatest
Wood Type Travelogue: Moore Wood Type | VIRGIN WOOD TYPE On a recent sleepy, summer Sunday, my wife and I visited with Scott Moore of Moore Wood Type in Columbus, Ohio. It was only fitting that I needed to take the Hamilton Road exit on the freeway to get to Scott’s house. Scott became a student of all things Hamilton Wood Type when his daughter, Erin Bec…
