Tonightâs reading is Matthew 21:23-27.
The Authority of Jesus Questioned
23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. âBy what authority are you doing these things?â they asked. âAnd who gave you this authority?â
24 Jesus replied, âI will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 Johnâs baptismâwhere did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?â
They discussed it among themselves and said, âIf we say, âFrom heaven,â he will ask, âThen why didnât you believe him?â 26 But if we say, âOf human originââwe are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.â
27 So they answered Jesus, âWe donât know.â
Then he said, âNeither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.â
Jesus knew what the chief priests and the elders were doing. They were scared of Him because He wasnât like any other teacher. They didnât know who had given Him the authority to say what he was saying. So they asked what they thought was a pretty straightforward question. They just didnât anticipate His answer.
They knew if they answered Him one way, saying His authority was from God, it made them look foolish because they didnât believe Him. But if they answered another way, saying it was from man, it made them look foolish as the people believed John was a prophet from God. So the chief priests and elders took the 3rd optionâŚsaying we donât know where your authority comes from. And Jesus replies, âNeither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.â
This was not the answer they expected at all.
We do this too. We donât believe at times that Jesus has authority given to Him by God. We challenge that and being that Jesus is Godâs perfect lamb and has authority over all of Heaven and Earth, we know deep within our souls that He is our King and LORD.
Letâs pray this together tonight:
Father God, give us grace to always submit to Your authority, for it comes from heaven and so can lead us there, where we will reign with You, forever.
Amen
Little Jesus reminded me earlier to read my Bible tonight. Did you read today? If not, you can go to Matthew 21:12-22. Thatâs what we will read tonight.
In this first reading, Jesus cleanses the temple, releasing the sacrificial animals and overturning tables. Little children in the temple area are crying out âHosanna!â to Jesus and He tells the chief priests and scribes âHave you never heard âOut of the mouths of infants and nursing babies, you have prepared praiseâ?
The second reading for today is where Jesus curses the fig tree. Jesus went to the tree and found plenty of leaves but no figs. He then tells it that âMay no fruit ever come from you again!â All of the disciples were amazed and Jesus explains that they too can do this if they have faith and do not doubt.
Isnât this much like us? We have so many doubts, but Jesus continues to speak truth to us. And I donât know about you, but Iâm grateful that he does. What will we learn tomorrow? I guess we will find out then. But for now, letâs pray together.
Heavenly Father, we come to You today with our heads bowed down, and our arms open wide, may we lead others to You. May we not be afraid to tell others of the Gospel or our story. Please provide us the words that we need to be spiritually active in this dark world.
In Jesusâ Name, we pray!
Amen
Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!
Holy Week is here and Little Jesus would like to remind you that this we have our Seder Supper on Thursday night (register via the Church Center app), our Good Friday service at 6:30pm and our Easter services next Sunday at 9am and 11am! We would love it if you would join us!
(Also, if you see Little Jesus around, donât be afraid to pick him up and take him with you. Spread the gospel of what He did for us on the cross and invite others to come to church this week!) â¤ď¸âď¸
