Catch the full interview tomorrow(Wednesday, March 20th ) with and the absolutely fascinating Dorota Quiroz. Then join us from 6-8pm for live painting and make your mark on Dorota’s next masterpiece!
I remember meeting Dorota Quiroz last year. She struck me as someone highly cultured. She was with a friend, who struck me the same way. My assistant noticed them about the same time I did. She admiringly said, “ Those are some sharp ladies”. I think I let that encounter write the narrative. I pictured someone who had a life rich in experiences and perhaps lacking in pain. She came to a few more shows, we had casual conversations, I learned little bits and pieces, all surface level. I was invited to a show at her home. I went. I was completely blown away. I had never seen the variety of work, everything jumped off the walls, and all the walls- literally all, were covered in every medium, color, subject matter and style I could ever imagine. She had jazz or something similar, playing. Friends gathered around and drank wine and all seemed to be in as much awe as I was. I was an outsider, to what I imagined as people who were becoming family. I was also in a very transformative period of my life. I was making major decisions. One of which, was to do her show – or any show. I had to do it, there was no question. Then, I stopped asking questions, bookmarked it in my mind that I would produce the show and ran full steam into a million other projects.
I ran through those projects at breakneck speed. Then, before I knew it, it was time to do her show. I had set myself up for an impossible task. It was my largest show ever, I had three days to hang it. That’s just one part. I also had to do her justice. My job is to make art out of the artist’s art. It’s terrifying and exhilarating. With the grace of God and some incredible help, it came together. Art on the walls, check. Cohesive, check. Displayed in a way that gave each of the nearly 300 pieces space to breathe, check. Arranged in a way someone could imagine it in their home, check. Then it was time to present to her. I couldn’t read her. Me, the master of empaths, had no idea what she was thinking. Had I failed? She had edits. No one had ever had edits before. That wasn’t it though. I was missing something. Something crucial.
Fast forward to the show. Everything on me feels broke. I secretly wonder if the swelling in my feet will ever go down and am even more curious about the bruises all over me. I guess they are from the anti-inflammatories I’ve been eating like candy for the past week and a half. I climb to the middle of the spiral staircase in the gallery, I simultaneously thank God and congratulate myself on accomplishing such a task. I need to film content for the rest of the show. I’m watching something magic happen. I see a woman take a blank canvas and begin to transform it into art. She’s considering things out loud. She decides to paint “Columbus” she wants the people to join in, the faces that make this place what it is, the background has to be perfect. She reminds of a girl I knew in High School. I wanted to be friends so bad with her, but I thought she was way too cool for me. Still, there’s the same unapologetic vibe. It’s someone who’s very in tune with their inner self. It’s not arrogance. It’s polishing from years of struggle and experience, it’s a beautiful reflection of knowing oneself. I sit and watch and something starts to beat in my heart like the pulsating in my back and knees, I’ve been wrong about this one. I have the story wrong. Later that evening, I read through the answers to the questions I sent the artist, this woman I’m starting to admire.
Every word I read, enforces just how wrong I had gotten this story. I’m positive there has been much joy in Dorota’s life, but there’s also been circumstances that I had no frame of reference to even begin to question. She was raised in communist Poland. Her life of travel wasn’t one of luxury. It was a life of necessity. There’s a part in the Q&A where she talks about a banana being something decadent. She talks about submersion into Western Culture and seeking political asylum. I read it, every word, and I have to know more. I sit down to talk to her. I’ve always been the type of person that everyone tells their life story to. Not this time. She quickly turns the questions on me. She has no desire sulk in the past. Her words are beautiful. Her viewpoint is one that we should all cling to.
I had forgotten the most fundamental truth, and the reasoning in my life’s work. Art isn’t just about a pretty picture on a wall. It is the story of someone’s soul. We connect to it because our spirit recognizes it’s self in what our eyes see displayed. It is the visceral equivalent of a song that moves you, a food that sooths you, or a smell that takes you to a precious moment in time. Art encompasses every facet of our lives, from the house we live in, to clothes we wear, to the car we drive. It is everything that makes us human.

I’ve spent a lot of time today thinking about if I should or shouldn’t share this. It was a paradox, the purpose of interview was to be vulnerable so that other entrepreneurs see that they’re not alone in their struggles, but then actually putting it out…… for my followers and people I know to read…it’s a whole different level of vulnerability.
I am beyond thankful for every single person that has been a part of this journey, both the cheerleaders and the opposition. When this interview was conducted, I was in a place of major evaluation, but as far as the opposition, I have and continue to make peace with everything that has made me strong……
