Even with an achilles tendon rupture, you need to PUSH INTENSITY, and tire out that muscle if you want any chance of getting back to your sports and activities.

This means bodyweight reps just won’t cut it - it’s going to take external resistance (and often heavier than people think!), so don’t shy away from the weights!

Here are 4 ways to avoid it:

👉 Avoid range of motion past neutral for 4 weeks
👉 Avoid eccentrics + stretching for 12 weeks
👉 Keep mobility exercises to low-to-moderate intensity with shorter duration holds
👉 Don’t get out of the boot too soon

Bodyweight calf raises is a good start, but it needs to be loaded with weights to get you back to your sport or activity.

Ultimately we need to develop CALF STRENGTH - this comes from LESS REPS, more WEIGHT!

Unfortunately this is where I see rehab often fail recreational athletes - lots of bodyweight or light weight reps and not enough INTENSITY!

It needs to be when the time is right for you of course - but it needs to happen!

When it comes to squats - loading in a front rack or goblet position can reduce strain on the achilles tendon, while still allowing you to strengthen the rest of your legs.

The rate and strength of the tendon repair has been shown to be improved with earlier loading.

Early mobility can also potentially reduce muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, adhesions, and deep venous thrombosis (DVT).

So while it seems smarter to minimize stress early in order to allow things to heal, you may actually be better off to applying some mechanical stress to promote better healing!

The risks are actually more when we DELAY rehab!

The two bigger problems that people are most fearful of our re-injury or tendon over lightning. And because of those fears, a lot of times protocols are more conservative in hopes it give you a better chance of avoiding those complications.

But when we look at the newer research, we actually see the risks for those problems lower when we just started earlier, not when we are more conservative.

But don’t just start loading because you read it’s good - get the proper guidance so you know what variations are appropriate for you, along with how much to do and how often to do it!

I hear MANY STORIES from people going through this injury…and of course re-ruptures is a TOUGH complication to have to deal with!

But ultimately those numbers are LOW, while the numbers of people who fail to restore strength or return to their sports and activities are MUCH HIGHER!

For me - a big part of this is because of all-too-common super conservative protocols.

Now - I’m not saying you need to be performing 300 # calf raises by week 3, but we do need to provide the right intensities to get the right adaptations through each phase of the recovery process.
