Guided meditation for anxiety—focusing on your exhale.

Photos from Ten Percent Happier's post 02/16/2024

Great podcast on how your breathing impacts your health. "Breathing is a missing pillar of health," says James Nestor. Those that have practiced yoga, qi gong or meditation will likely not find this cutting edge news. However there is a lot of great reminders, science and tips in this episode.

Working with your breathing is one of the pillars to improving stress and (and therefore all aspects of your health!) In fact, one of my main tips for working with anxiety is to focus on your exhale. By focusing on your exhale, over time, you naturally start to empty your lungs more completely which then allows you to naturally breathe more deeply, without it feeling forced or difficult.

We love the content that the Ten Percent Happier folks are sharing with the world and hope that you'll check them out: https://link.chtbl.com/wCudUEOi

It may seem like an oxymoron to get “stuck by needles” in order to relax. However, most patients are surprised by how profoundly relaxed they feel during and after their acupuncture treatments.

My patient just got up off the treatment table and said "I feel so much calmer than when I walked in." That is how you begin to treat anxiety, naturally.

A beautiful version by Mstislav Rostropovich, Seiji Ozawa and the BSO. (Too dynamic for the treatment music mix at the clinic so enjoy at home though some good speakers). If you don't have Spotify, see comments for the Youtube link.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Saturday February 10, 2024 begins the new lunar year, the Year of the Dragon. Unlike its European namesake, the dragon in Chinese mythology is benevolent yet powerful.

The Chinese dragon symbolizes spring, prosperity, good health, rain and good harvests. Their revered status within Chinese culture has led the dragon to become a totem each spring with dragon dances performed at Chinese New Year celebrations around the world. They are often depicted chasing a “dragon’s pearl” which represents wisdom, especially the wisdom associated with nature.

Chinese Medicine has developed over thousands of years through its keen observation of both the human body and nature. Chinese Medicine teaches that strength and wellness is gained by following the natural energy and cycles of the seasons.

Compared to January 1st, the lunar new year holds a more meaningful start to the new year as it marks the beginning of spring in the historical Chinese calendar (which is a lunisolar calendar). Although New England usually has plenty of winter weather still left, with careful observation you can see nature begin to transform and bring forth new life, even in early February. The days begin to feel longer. The sun is higher. There are more bird songs and animal activity.

You may also feel your energy and creativity begin to rise, like the sap of a sugar maple, ready to actually work on those new year’s resolutions.

This is a great time to plan and embark on new ventures in your spiritual, creative, health or business development.

The spring season is associated with creativity, the Jue Yin (Liver) channel and organ, the wood element, the eyes, the color green and the sour flavor.

When your Jue Yin energy is not in balance, specific illnesses caused by this imbalance will worsen during the spring, especially problems such as migraines, digestive issues, hormone imbalances, depression, anxiety and insomnia.

Click here: https://www.concordcenteracupuncture.com/7-signs-you-need-acupuncture-this-spring/ if you would like to learn more about how Jue Yin or Liver imbalances can affect your health and what you can do to help this spring.

Since 2006, we have worked to keep our patients healthy and we are deeply grateful that you have trusted us to care for you and your family.

Thank you for your trust, friendship and support. In this auspicious Year of the Dragon, may you and your family experience a joyful, healthy and prosperous 2024. We hope to see you soon!

"A 2018 meta-analysis of over 20,000 patients in 39 high-quality randomized controlled trials found that acupuncture was superior to both sham and no acupuncture for back or neck pain, osteoarthritis, headaches and shoulder pain. These outcomes mostly persisted over time — even after 12 months of receiving treatment."

There is a Chinese parable about a strongman trying to pull an ox by the tail. No matter how hard he pulls, the ox won’t budge. Finally he pulls the tail off. Exhausted and frustrated, he gives up. A small child comes along and is able to lead the larger and stronger ox by its nose because she guides it using the direction it naturally wants to go.

Go against nature, against the flow and you meet resistance and failure. Work with nature and its natural flow will help you.

Are pulling the proverbial ox by the tail or leading it by its nose?
