Words from the GOAT, open face at address (with arm structure) is a DRAW setup, closed face is a fade setup! Most amateurs would lower their handicap by 50-75% if they understood the WHY of this truth.
Director of golf Brannon WatsonBrannon Watson explains: “A large percentage of amateurs that struggle with a slice actually set up with a severely closed club face. The fact that they beleive this will help them stop missing with a slice shows a gross misunderstanding (be it conscious or unconscious) of ball flight laws and the physical reactions necessary between club and ball to impart spin in the desired direction. Face point at impact controls the lions share of ball start line. Understanding that the ball will mostly start where the face is pointed at impact and the club path or swinging directions relative to is responsible for the spin is the key first step. This is hard to feel and isn’t a natural relationship, so it must be trained in, and can be done so very quickly when working with a student on our Trackman or GC Quad launch monitor systems. I beleive if every amateur golfer would learn why closing the Face at adddress is actually setting up for a likely slice (or dead left pull) and vice versa an overwhelming amount of handicaps could be cut in half in a matter of weeks by just understanding how it works then prescribed practice intentionally training the new movement relationships. Then a golfer would just know what it FEELS like to hit a draw, hit a fade, and not have to think! Thinking holds back performance, we have to think to learn, but once we know we can just execute! I’ve never seen a slicer not be able to within a single lesson not be able to stop slicing and get the ball to curve the other way when that student truly grasped the concept. It may not be a controlled draw at first, but the slices stop immediately and better golf usually follows within days or weeks!
