Keeping our children entertained when it's continuing to rain is hard. Instead of relying on TV or tablets try reading a book together, have them draw a favorite character, play games, put together Legos, or try making up your own games or contests.
We will be open Monday! If you get voice mail on the first ring, it means we are on the phone. Wait a fee minutes and call back instead of leaving a voicemail. It's quicker!
📢 New Directions has experienced a significant influx of people seeking refuge during the storm, and as a result, our supplies have been rapidly depleted. We kindly ask for your support. Please drop off donations at our Men's Shelter 1005 Osceola St., Myrtle Beach. For ease of purchase and delivery please consider donating from our wish lists. SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORIC FLOOD EVENTS
The map shows the footprint of the heavy rains that fell during South Carolina's historic flood event in 2015, Matthew in 2016, and Florence in 2018. Everyone wants to know if the potential flood event this week will be the same as any of these. Short answer: Yes and no. Some places in our viewing area will see worse flooding while others will see less. Precisely where the heaviest rain bands will set up is not known yet.
In 2015, most of the heavy rain was over Georgetown and Williamsburg counties, so much of our area didn't see horrible flooding.
In 2016, Matthew's heavy rain fell on the entire area, where the ground was already saturated and rivers were high. It didn't take much to cause extreme flooding.
In 2018, Florence's extreme rains fell over our northern counties, sending enormous amounts of water through the river system and to the coast. Record high river levels lead to catastrophic flooding.
Hopefully, with our rivers not as high and the highest rain totals to our south, the flooding won't be as bad as some of these past events. No way to be sure of that though so plan for the worst.
A detailed look at what to expect from Debby in the post below this one.
Family Outreach is closed August 6-9. Due to heavy rain and windy conditions. Please stay home and off the roads if you can because of possible localized flooding. We will reopen Monday, August 12.
Congratulations to these participants for completing Triple P Level 3 Discussion Group.
