The Friends of the Cookeville Depot Museum board of directors is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $64,950 as part of the Capital Maintenance and Improvement grants administered by the Tennessee State Museum. The Tennessee General Assembly funded a direct-appropriation grant in the 2023-2024 Appropriations Act in the amount of $5 million to the State Museum “for the sole purpose of providing grants to museums with a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or affiliated with a governmental entity for capital maintenance and improvements.” The Tennessee State Museum received 170 applications for this highly competitive grant.
The Friends of the Cookeville Depot Museum organization is honored to have been selected to receive funding for the beloved steam engine. The Baldwin Locomotive Works steam engine, which was built in 1913 and has been on the Depot grounds for more than twenty years, is a valuable piece of Cookeville’s history and is currently in need of cosmetic restoration. The grant will be used to fund full pressure washing, rust mitigation, priming, painting and graphics. Once the restoration is complete, the steam engine will remain on display at the Cookeville Depot Museum for future generations to enjoy!
The mission of the Friends of the Cookeville Depot Museum is to preserve and promote the railroad history of Cookeville. The organization works to raise funds and awareness of Cookeville's rich history and the preservation of its irreplaceable landmarks.
