Tip: Get to know your triggers.

We all have spending triggers. Spending triggers can be certain emotions or places that encourage you to spend. For example, if you can’t go by your favorite coffee shop without spending money there, that’s a trigger. If retail therapy is your way of turning around a crappy day, that’s a trigger. Knowing your spending triggers can help you avoid spending when you don’t need to!

Having and maintaining good credit does not mean you can only have one or two cards. The key is keeping balances and utilization low as well as understanding how each account affects your credit.

Applying for a credit card can lead to a slight dip in your credit score, especially when you apply repeatedly within a short period of time. Each application signifies that you will have less money to pay for every additional credit card or loan you get. And that’s a bad thing from a lender’s perspective. More importantly, applying in bulk tells lenders that you are eager to borrow, which doesn’t bode well for your ability to pay.

If you have ever reviewed your credit report and noticed that something was incorrect, you probably know that you don’t just have to live with it. As soon as you know that there is an error in your credit report, you should dispute it. If you are unsure about the process or have any questions at all, know we are here to help guide you 🙌

When your credit limit goes up and your balance stays the same, it instantly lowers your overall credit utilization, which can improve your credit. Call your credit card company and ask if you can get a higher limit without a “hard” credit inquiry, which can temporarily drop your score a few points. If your income has gone up or you've added more years of positive credit experience, you have a fair shot at getting a higher limit!

If you find any inaccurate, untimely, misleading, biased, incomplete, or questionable items on your credit report, it’s both your right and responsibility to dispute the information and get it removed. Plus, removing negative items on your credit reports can also have a huge positive impact on your credit scores.

While many people still don’t realize that it’s possible to have them removed, there are thousands of consumers successfully disputing such items every day. It’s actually easier than you might think and also a much better alternative to simply waiting years for negative information to drop off of your credit reports.

Don’t close accounts in good standing.

If you have outstanding balances on credit cards, car loans, or student debt — but they’re in good standing and you’ve been making your monthly payments — keep at it. Regular, on-time payments are the solid foundation for a great credit score. But if you’re thinking of paying off a balance entirely and closing down an account, hold that thought for a second.

A good rule of thumb is to look at the report as a grade card. A credit score is ascending not descending. So, you do not start with an A and lose points, you start at the very bottom or a 350 score and gain points based on the types of accounts you have.

One thing to keep in mind is that the 3 main credit agencies are independent of one another and though they conduct their business of data gathering to compile credit reports in a similar fashion they do not operate in the same way. This is the primary reason why consumers who obtain a credit report from the three largest credit reporting agencies get a report back with some different data.

Plan a money date!

Whether it is with your significant other or by yourself, setting a date to review all of your finances each month is a good habit to build. Log all your debts. Check your credit reports. Calculate your current and potential income. Review your budget (or decide to make one), and re-evaluate your emergency funds and available credit.

A credit-builder loan is a unique type of loan that is specifically intended to help increase the user’s credit score. With a credit-builder loan, the “borrower” actually pays the lender in monthly payments and then receives the money in a savings account at the end. During the process, the lender reports the monthly payments to the credit bureaus, which builds the borrower’s credit history. Want to know if this option makes sense for you? Give us a call!

If on-time bill payment is something that you struggle with, one option is to set up automatic payments with alerts prior to the account connected being charged. They’re pulled on the same day every month, which means you only need to focus on having money in your bank account instead of paying on time.

First things first, contact one of the credit reporting bureaus—Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion—and place a fraud alert on your credit report. A fraud alert lasts for 90 days, during which time lenders are required to verify your identity before approving new loans or lines of credit. Next, check your credit report. Are there any accounts on it that you did not set up? If so, you need to dispute the error immediately. You don’t have to deal with identity theft on your own. If someone you know, who has good credit, is willing to add you to their account as an authorized user, it may help improve your credit. But be careful who you ask, if the primary account holder has bad credit or starts exercising poor credit-management skills, like making late payments, and the card issuer reports account activity so it appears in your credit reports as well, it could negatively affect your credit.
