Did you know that there are only four buildings left in Corinth that were standing during the Civil War? One of those is the Verandah-Curlee House. Originally constructed for one of Corinth’s co-founders, Hamilton Mask, the Verandah-Curlee House saw extensive use during the Civil War as a headquarters for officers from Confederate and Union armies.
The first officer to take up wartime residence in the home was then-Major General Braxton Bragg, in March 1862. From this house, Bragg served as one of General Albert Sidney Johnston’s corps commanders, and the Army of the Mississippi’s chief of staff. In the overnight hours of April 2-3, 1862, Johnston woke Bragg up and presented him with a message from then-Brigadier General Benjamin Cheatham, who was reporting on the movement of Union forces at Crump’s Landing. It was on Bragg’s nightstand—while Bragg was still in his nightclothes—that the orders were written that would set the Battle of Shiloh into motion.
During the Siege of Corinth, Bragg would continue to be headquartered at the Verandah-Curlee House, but he would have a roommate. Major General Earl Van Dorn would share the Verandah-Curlee House with Bragg when he and his Army of the West arrived in Corinth to try and hold the town against the advancing Union armies.
After the Confederates evacuated Corinth, Major General Henry W. Halleck would reside here for a short time. When Halleck left Mississippi for Washington, D.C., Brigadier General Grenville M. Dodge assumed command at Corinth and he made the Verandah-Curlee House his headquarters for the duration of Union occupation.
Finally, following General John B. Hood’s battles at Franklin and Nashville in November and December 1864, he would use this home as a headquarters as the shattered Army of Tennessee sought to recover from those terrible engagements.
If you find yourself visiting Corinth, don’t forget to stop at the Verandah-Curlee House and see a unique part of Shiloh’s history for yourself.
Check with Verandah-Curlee House on Facebook for current hours and conditions if you want to tour the home.
