Sometimes the path you’re on… leads you to sauna!

Sauna therapy and cold plunge each deliver physiological benefits to the body. When combined, their benefits increase, contributing to improved brain, heart, and immune system function.

🧠BODY & BRAIN BENEFITS

In 2000, researchers studied participants who were exposed to hydrotherapy at three different temperatures, 32oC, 20oC, and 14oC. The study exposed participants to head-out cold water immersion, and found that exposure to 14C water (57.2F) produced significant results in both metabolism and dopamine levels in the brain, increasing participants metabolic rate by 350% and plasma dopamine concentrations by 250%. 🫀HEART BENEFITS

Patients with chronic heart failure participated in cold water immersion followed by low intensity sauna therapy (140F) for 15 minutes. Data collected showed lowered levels of LDL cholesterol and increased levels of HDL cholesterol in the patients. (1)

🗣️IMMUNE SYSTEM BENEFITS

Repeated cold exposure increased cells, including leukocytes and granulocytes that stimulate the function of the immune system. (1)

Traditional vs. Infrared, probably the most heated debate in the sauna market.

While both modalities cover the basics of providing heat and a designated place to relax, scientific research surrounding their benefits is pretty one-sided.

Traditional saunas are the most studied methodology to date [1] despite many studies not being initiated or conducted until after 2000.

With so few scientific studies about infrared sauna, we don’t think it’s appropriate to compare them here. Instead, here are a few reasons why Coast & Valley Sauna prefers the traditional sweat…

Ritual : similar to meditative or spiritual practices, we find value in the ritual of preparing and taking sauna. Gathering wood, building and stoking a fire, and gently initiating the first löyly are some of our favorite steps of traditional sauna bathing.

Senses : while infrared saunas might contain cedar paneling, there’s nothing like the aroma of a toasty cedar sauna. The crackling fire, prickling of steam, and maybe even the taste of some post-sauna snacks can really elevate the experience.

Quality Time : whether it’s a solo session, family sweat, or social sauna, connections can be made in a traditional sauna that an infrared hot box just can’t match. As Bernhard Hililia said in ‘The Sauna Is’, “The sauna was not built for saving time, but for spending it well.”
