Samaritan Graduate Medical Education
Samaritan’s Graduate Medical Education programs encompass the entire health care spectrum.
Congratulations to Chief Harris on a successful match into Surgical Critical Care fellowship at University of Kansas! We are so proud of you.
A couple of months ago, Chief Sunny Patel successfully matched into Vascular Surgery fellowship at the University of Tennessee. He’s the first from our program to pursue vascular surgery and we are so proud of his successful match! Can’t wait to see where his career takes him!
So proud of Dr Danielle Neimann, PGY2 representing Samaritan at the Northwest Colorectal Surgeons Annual Meeting presenting about Surgical Ethics and Goals of Care!
Safety is our priority and campus guests may notice that construction continues for the new Elks Drive/Highway 99W intersection with portions of the new roadbed taking shape. When this project is completed, the new roadway will include a traffic signal at the 99W intersection to provide safer and easier access to the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center campus and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Last week we had a great turnout for our Samaritan Regional Scholarly Symposium, which showcased poster presentations of 30 quality improvement and empirical research projects that were recently completed by Samaritan Health Services residents, as well as College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific – Northwest and Oregon State University Students.
Phase one of the Elks Drive/Highway 99W realignment project has started with brush and tree removal and orange barrier fences installed protecting vegetation from the construction areas.
When completed, the new roadway will include a traffic signal at the 99W intersection to provide safer and easier access to the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center campus and the surrounding neighborhoods.
What a successful Samaritan Research Symposium this year! Louise Rousseau from the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program presented a poster on Implimenting a safety plan smart form in Epic!
Internal Medicine intern Brent Baldrica, DO, presented his research project at the American Thoracic Society Conference in San Diego. This project was a collaboration with Dr. Thamara Magloire and Dr. Tomer Pelleg.
May is Stroke Awareness Month, The Stroke Coordinators from Samaritan Health Services wanted to make sure the community knows how to rapidly recognize strokes. To help easily recall the symptoms of a stroke they use the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T. B stands for Balance/Dizziness, difficulty walking, listing to one side. E Stands for eyes, blurred vision, double vision or loss of vision. F is for facial droop, or numbness on one side of the face. A is for arm, is one arm weaker than the other? If one arm is weaker than the other, check the strength in your leg as there may be some weakness as well on the same side as your arm. S is for Speech, this could be slurred speech, mumbling/garbled speech, inappropriate words, or the inability to speak at all. T is for Time. Call 911 and make sure to take note of when the symptoms started. Time is Brain, for every hour you are having a stroke you lose 3.6 years of brain function. There are a few emergent treatments available, head to the nearest hospital immediately.
Caesar the No Drama Llama came to visit as Celebrating Samaritans week wrapped up! Our DIO and Coordinators couldn’t resist!
Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Administration Team kicked off National Nurse's Week by serving hundreds of pancakes as a thank you for the long hours and dedication our nurses give to Samaritan and the community. Samaritan also provided a selection of plants from our partners at Peoria Gardens for each nurse to take home.
Using PRIDE in every interaction to build a healthier community.
It takes a special kind of person to become a doctor, and we are grateful for their dedication. Happy Doctors Day!
Our Program Directors, Dr. Benjamin Lafferty (Child & Adolescent Psychiatry) and Dr. Patricia Krisar White (Psychiatry) attended the annual meeting of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training earlier this month. As chair of the poster award committee, Dr. Lafferty presented awards to the winners and runners-up. Pictured below is Dr. Lafferty with those who received awards. Also pictured at the conference is Dr. Krisar White.

Our PGY2 Rural Family Medicine residents (pictured below) are paving new paths and building healthier communities in Newport, OR.
Samaritan Health Services is one of the many Oregon hospitals "growing their own” workforce by training these rural physicians, helping them develop specialized rural caregiving skills in its two-year Family Medicine Rural Residency program based in Newport. These are the first three residents, who are ready to improve .
A shout out to our orthopedic residency program coordinator Ronda Hathaway❤
Ronda received a shining star nomination for demonstrating passion, respect, integrity, dedication, and excellence! She went above and beyond her duties as a program coordinator during their recent in-person interviews. Her program director, Dr. Jacque Krumrey comments that Ronda goes the extra mile every day for the program.
BOOK CLUB POST: I hope everyone had a great holiday season and the new year is starting off strong. I wanted to start the new year with all of you with a book. Brene Brown has written an inspiring and thoughtful book about vulnerability titled Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead. This is a great book for anyone who struggles with being a perfectionist, or who fears failure. Brene uses a combination of research, personal experience, and a conversational way of writing that brings the reader to a comforting and safe space.
Please leave comments if you've read this book, if you plan to, or if you have other recommendations for great books!
Sincerely, Jenn Serfin
