Fall 2024 Bonanza is almost here! If you’re new to the Orange County Organic Gardening Club, Welcome!

We have a Bonanza (plant exchange) each
spring and fall.

At our September 10th meeting, members will be taking
home seeds, soil and “conetainers” (“cones”), labels
and growing instructions, all provided by the club. On
your seed envelope you will see a date indicating when
you should start your seeds. This date is very important,
as your plants need enough time to grow before they
are exchanged.

At our October meeting you will bring back your plants
and pick up a nice variety of vegetable plants to start
your cool weather garden! You can look forward to
having a nice selection of leafy green vegetables, like
lettuces and spinach, cabbage, broccoli, beets, and
many other vegetables that grow well during the cooler
months of the year.

You will be able to pick up the materials you need for
Bonanza beginning at 6:30 pm, before the program
starts at 7 pm. We will have a demonstration on seed
starting so that you can observe and ask questions
about what to do with your planting materials after you
get home.

You will be given an information sheet with instructions
on how to start your seeds, so be sure to read the it
carefully, as this will help you be successful with your
seeds. If you cannot come to the September meeting
but wish to participate, please make arrangements for
someone to collect the items for you. If you plan to
participate in our Bonanza make sure you are a current
member. Download the new member form to join or renew.

If you participated in the last Bonanza, you should have
cones at home. Before coming to our September
meeting, please count your cones, and pick up only
enough to make a total of 48. If you’re growing lettuce
or peas, you will need to pick up 6 packs instead of
cones.

The cones you will be picking up will either be new or
sterilized used ones. Be sure to sterilize the cones you
have at home before planting in them.

Some seeds we may have this year are beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, celery, fava beans, kale, kohlrabi,
leeks, head and leaf lettuce, mesclun, mustard greens,
onions, parsley, peas, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas,
spinach Swiss chard and turnips. Checkout the September Newsletter coming to your inbox soon!

"The dandelion is the only flower that represents the three celestial bodies of the sun, moon, and stars: The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moons, and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars.
The dandelion flower opens to greet the morning and closes in the evening to go to sleep.
Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves, flower. It can be used for food, medicine, and dye for colouring.
Up until the 1800s, people would pull grass out of their lawns to make room for dandelions and other useful “weeds” like chickweed, malva and chamomile.
The name dandelion is taken from the French word “dent de lion” meaning lion’s tooth, referring to the coarsely-toothed leaves. 🦁
Dandelions have one of the longest flowering seasons of any plant.
Dandelion seeds are often transported away by a gust of wind and they travel like tiny parachutes. Seeds are often carried as many as five miles from their origin!
Birds, insects, and butterflies consume nectar or seeds of dandelion.
Honey from bees pollinating dandelions is quite delicious. 🐦 🐛 🐜 🦋 🐝.
Dandelion flowers do not need to be pollinated to form seeds.
Root of dandelion can be used as a substitute for coffee.
Dandelion is used in folk medicine to treat infections and liver disorders. Tea made of dandelion act as a diuretic.
If you know dandelions, they’ll grow shorter stalks to spite you.
Dandelions are, quite possibly, the most successful plants that exist. They are masters of survival worldwide."
