Our Story
After the tragic fire of 1880 that consumed the Glassmire House, Alanson B. Crowell constructed what would later become known as the Hotel Crittenden, containing 96 rooms. Each consisted of a bed and a sink only, with communal baths at the end of each hall. He operated until 1902 as the Crowell House, when W. William Crittenden of Oswayo, a former representative in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, purchased the hotel which still bears his name. Harry Knight of Brockway, PA and his wife Ella purchased the hotel the next year, and operated until 1907, when it was sold to James Kelley, an Irish immigrant who had settled in Galeton. James operated the establishment through prohibition, until 1934. Harry Knight, who had been a hotelier all his life, returned with his wife Ella to resume the operation of the Hotel Crittenden, which they both adored. Harry succumbed in 1940, and Ella ran the hotel alone until a few weeks before her death in 1963. The Hotel has changed hands several times since then, and In 2014, having fallen on hard times, the hotel was sold to Hans Nielsen. It was in rough shape, and along with eventual Co-owner Chandra Livingston, they began work to restore the hotel to its former glory. The hotel rooms have been remodeled to meet the expectations of the modern hotel guest, but the lobby and dining areas have been kept as original as possible, restoring from old pictures and recollections when available.
Over the years, The Hotel Crittenden and its taproom have served as a refuge for many an interesting guest. Famed crime fighter Eliot Ness was known to visit the tavern after his retirement, as was Oscar Fraley. The two would occasionally meet in the Taproom where Ness would tell the stories that would become The Untouchables.
With its rich history and historic charm, we hope that you, too, will enjoy your visit to the historic Hotel Crittenden.
