Our little broken leg boy, Vinnie, is doing OK in his forced inactivity period so that his leg can heal. A couple of videos taken the last few days show that he's a pretty happy camper all things considered. One of his friends got him some toys to help him deal with the inevitable boredom and he's happy to have them! Such a good boy!!
Just before release to the owner, instructions for post surgery care and any meds are gathered and passed on to the pet owner at time of discharge. 99% of the time, everything goes like clock work and the patient, a little confused, maybe hurting a bit, goes home to a new life where its life will be healthier, longer, and less stressful, now that breeding and related behavior are no longer players. And, our community will have a lot fewer pups and kittens to have to find good homes for. Also taken care of at this work station is setting up each animal's file as it comes in, and maintaining the records as things happen. It's a very busy table!
After surgery, each animal goes to a recovery area where it is watched carefully to make sure it recovers from the procedure without complication. Knowledgeable staff monitor the pet visually and checking vital signs until satisfied that recovery will be uneventful. Before discharging the pet to its owner, it is definitely awake and expected to return to normal activity on schedule.
Taking our readers through the clinic activities... Here's the start of the intake process. As you look around the huge room, you'll see that it's going to be a busy place in a hot second. Sign up for the event began at 12:01 Sat AM, and people were already crowding in to sign as early as possible. The animals were taken into the facility in the order in which they were signed up. Once the clinic was underway, then those who had signed up were called by name. Sign up early, then wait for your name to be called...lots of people sleeping in their cars so as not to miss their appointment!
Rosie, the Wonder Dog, continues to enthrall and amaze us with her recovery from just about the worst orthopedic injuries we've ever seen. This video was taken a few days ago, when Rosie came to spend the weekend at Humane Society for Inland Mendocino in Redwood Valley. She was on a little vacation from her foster home on the coast and she got to work her magic, meeting a lot of people and other dogs. She also got to try out the agility ramp and she gave it a big thumbs up approval. Her reaction to it was to 'climb higher and see how far I can go'. Very few dogs are that eager to give it a go when they first see it. Rosie's reaction to this new thing was very telling. It was a great example of how this plucky young girl sees life. No obstacle is too daunting for her! We are hoping that Rosie soon finds her Forever 'I've Got It Made' Home. As you can see in the video, she's got super mobility, considering how broken she was just a few months ago. You can see her xray in the comments. Because of Rosie's personality, youth and our refusal to not give this dog every chance to have the life she deserved, AND, the thousands of dollars in contributions, she got the thumbs up from us to let Dr Cannon at Wasson Memorial Clinic in Lakeport, work her magic. Dr Cannon said, 'I think we can do it' and she was right! Let us know if you want any information about how to adopt Rosie, or want to send a donation (we're still a little short on covering the $16,000 surgery charges), please send us a message.
Now that you've seen Piper zooming around in her Pink ATV, here she is trying her legs out without support! We were amazed at how well she did! Looks like the ATV is helping her to gain strength in her right rear leg!
