Alice Min Soo Chun, a Korean American, is co-founder and CEO of Solight Design and the inventor of the Solar PuffTM, which is the world’s only self-inflatable, portable solar light. The Solar Puff is an origami-style solar light that folds flat and transforms into beautiful cube and pyramid shapes when pulled open. Inspired to create a pollution free environment for her son, who was diagnosed with asthma, as well to provide clean lighting in developing countries, Chun focused her research on developing solar technology as a clean energy solution. According to Chun’s company, use of a single solar light, instead of a lightbulb, can save 90 pounds of carbon emissions per year. Since inventing this eco-friendly, sustainable light in 2010, Chun has travelled the globe to bring light to those in need, including those in war and natural disaster zones. Her recent humanitarian efforts brought her to Ukraine, where she hand-delivered her solar light to refugees and the homeless. Chun has received numerous awards, including the 2018 USPTO’s “Patent for Humanity” award, Energy category. She is named among Forbes 50 Over 50 recognizable women of 2022 and is a co-author of the book Ground Rules in Humanitarian Design.

Steven Chen, a Taiwanese American, is a co-founder of YouTube - a video sharing website that has transformed the way we communicate, learn and connect with one another. Steven, the former Chief Technology Officer of YouTube, was instrumental in building YouTube and played a key role in the official launch of the company in December of 2005. At the time of the launch, YouTube received more than two million video views each day, but by the following summer of 2006, YouTube served more than 100 million videos per day. In November of 2006, Chen and his co-founder sold YouTube for $1.65 billion dollars. Steven has generously used his wealth, in part, to pave the way for the next generation of Asian American philanthropists and entrepreneurs who believe in giving back to the community. Among others, he gifted $1 million to his alma mater, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy for the creation of the “Innovation Hub,” a facility to support student entrepreneurship.

The late Chinese-American virologist and molecular biologist, Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal, was instrumental in the fight against AIDS. She led the team of scientists who were the first to clone HIV and determine the function of its genes. Cloning HIV allowed them to understand how HIV attacks the immune system and ultimately causes AIDS. Her AIDS research not only helped in the development of therapies and medicine to treat AIDS, but provided methods for cloning and understanding viruses. These methods are still used today to better understand modern diseases such as COVID-19.

Ajay Batt, an Indian American computer architect, developed several computer-related technologies and is a named inventor on numerous U.S and international patents. He is best known for inventing the Universal Serial Bus, also known as the “USB.” While working for Intel in the early 1990s, he was frustrated by the difficulty his young daughter experienced while connecting to the family’s computer printer. Hoping to solve this problem, he pitched the idea of “Universal Serial Bus” technology to Intel, who approved the project and provided the resources to begin building USB support into its chips. By the late 1990s, the USB became an industry standard specifying the physical interfaces and protocols for connecting, data transferring and powering of hosts, such as personal computers, peripherals, and hubs. It was once the most popular ways of transferring data from one device to another and remains widely used today.

American surgeon Michael Ellis DeBakey was a legendary physician, educator, and inventor. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he was the oldest child of Lebanese immigrants. Dr. DeBakey’s work transformed cardiovascular surgery, raised medical education standards, and influenced national health care policy. He pioneered dozens of operative procedures such as aneurysm repair, coronary bypass, and endarterectomy, which routinely save thousands of lives each year. He performed some of the first heart transplants. His inventions included the roller pump (a key component of heart-lung machines) as well as artificial hearts and ventricular assist pumps. From the small Baylor University School of Medicine in Houston, he built a premier medical center, and there trained several generations of top surgeons from all over the world. For 75 years his professional expertise and wisdom informed health care policy in the U.S. and abroad.
