Crestone Dark Sky Community
Crestone Colorado is known for, among other things, it's intensely dark sky.
Visitors from around the world travel to Crestone for it's spiritual resources, outdoor opportunities and to enjoy the pristine environment.
“According to data from the citizen science project Globe at Night, the night sky is growing about 10% brighter each year. In addition to the aesthetic value of dark and quiet skies, there is tremendous educational and scientific value. Senator Hickenlooper’s Dark and Quiet Skies Act will provide essential infrastructure and resources needed to preserve and protect scientific space observations,” said David Brain, Chair of the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Hickenlooper, Crapo Introduce Bill to Preserve Night Sky from Interference, Aid Research | Senator John Hickenlooper WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Mike Crapo introduced the bipartisan Dark and Quiet Skies Act to preserve the night sky from unintentional light and radio interference that disrupts industry and academic space research.
Presented Saturday, Aug 10 2024 at the Crestone Charter School.
My theme this year is Wonder of the Night Sky. I believe that wonder and awe are important for my mental health. There is something wondrous about seeing light that has traveled 2600 years from the star Deneb, and knowing that light started its journey just as ancient Athens was gettings it first taste of democracy. It is wondrous to see the Andromeda galaxy and know that light left around the time the first hominids appear in the fossil record.
Those ancient photons are absorbed in our retina and converted to electrical energy that becomes a part of our mind. We know that all the atoms of our body (save hydrogen/helium) were created by long-dead stars. We are literally made of stars, and powered by starlight.
A friend showed me his tattoo that included moon and stars on the day I created this presentation. He said that he used to experience existential dread looking up at the night sky, but that he has healed from that. I shared about my presentation. I said I consider the stars ancestors and family. I think this awareness is also essential to my continued mental health. We are not alone in the universe, we are surrounded by relatives.
We can't wait to see you tomorrow, Satuday August 10th at the Crestone Charter School for our 4th annual Dark Sky Celebration

Your Guide to Stargazing in Colorado Travelers are flocking to the West for what its wide-open spaces lack: light pollution. We break down where—and how—to best enjoy stargazing in the Centennial State.
Hi friends!! It's almost here! Our 2nd Annual Community Dark Skies Celebration!!! We sure do hope to see you next week!! Vendors - please PM us if you're interested:) To the stars!!
Artificial light is a pollutant that has serious and harmful consequences. Effective outdoor lighting reduces light pollution, leading to a better quality of life for all.
This is our moment. According to a recent study led by the University of Exeter, the pace at which our naturally dark night is being drowned in artificial light is increasing at an alarming rate, up to 270% in just 25 years.
The International Dark-Sky Association has spent decades successfully fighting light pollution from the ground.
We now face a new threat—satellite swarms. By the end of 2030, as many as 100,000 satellites will orbit the earth. This means our night sky would no longer be dark! There would be limited star gazing, or visible constellations, or even the occasional shooting star! The night sky’s brightness would increase by a staggering 250%.
Today, we are prepared to mobilize our network of advocates to take action on satellite swarms. Support International Dark-Sky Association’s UNVEIL THE NIGHT $100,000 matching gift campaign. All donations will be doubled. Help us reach our goal by December 31st and slow down these emerging threats.
