For a depressed mood, we often have to get moving, and think about what do we need to do (behavioral activation). For anxiety, our mind is moving too much, and we need to slow down and think about what do we need to do right now (mindfulness).

Penn neurocriminologist Adrian Raine has found further evidence for the efficacy of omega-3 supplementation by conducting a meta-analysis of 29 randomized controlled trials. It shows modest short-term effects—he estimates this intervention translates to a 30% reduction in aggression—across age, gender, diagnosis, treatment duration, and dosage. Raine is the lead author of a new paper published in the journal Aggressive and Violent Behavior, with Lia Brodrick of the Perelman School of Medicine.

After a tough loss the loser is already stressed, with cortisol streaming through their blood. If you are the coach or teacher or parent don’t beat them down. If you are in conversation with yourself, stop beating yourself up. Research on professional rugby players found that watching what they did wrong after a game led to elevated cortisol and worse performance the next game. Watching what they did well had the opposite effect, a bump in testosterone and better performance.

"Bids" are requests for attention, and can be as simple and seemingly insignificant as one person saying "Look at that bird!" In a happy, long-lasting relationship, the partner would respond by looking out the window and commenting on the bird.

It's taught me to zoom in on a small detail in someone's life, ask deeper questions about it, and bring it up the next time I see them rather than just passively nodding along until I get to talk.
