In addition to central Virginia being a great wealth of opportunities for consigning and buying second-hand, there are several mail-in options available for keeping your clothing out of the landfill and the oceans. See links in comments.

Persimmon will be reaching out this year to create a network of local business leaders interested in helping make sure our clothing and textiles get their longest life - stay tuned!

Several places online will make sure your clothing gets used to its best advantage.

For Persimmon, every day is Earth Day (April 22nd). We not only keep thousands of clothes out of the landfill each year, we use only safe cleaning products, recycled/recyclable paper products, and compostable and reused shopping bags brought in by consignors and customers. In 2024, we plan on launching several programs encouraging the ongoing reclamation and recycling/upcycling of garments. Stay tuned for those exciting developments, and may every day be Earth Day for you and your loved ones!

Fashion has a huge environmental footprint, including generating up to 10% of the entire world's carbon emissions, using enough water to meet the needs of 5 million people, and generating 20% of all of the world's industrial wastewater. In addition, the fashion industry is guilty of many human rights labor violations.

How can you help ensure your clothes have the longest life possible? Wash, stain-treat, and mend before donating, or the clothing will end up in the dumpster. Buy from small businesses, American-made, and Fair Trade Certified. Keep your favorites going for longer by air drying and washing in cold water and gentle cycle. Clothing can be used as fabric on numerous other projects when its life as a garment has come to an end - upcycle them into new clothing or housewares! Finally, when it truly is time to go, drop the clothing at a textile recycling center. Non-plastic clothing can be composted, so try to buy and wear natural fibers as much as possible!
