This tree does best in full sun to partial shade.

The Golden Rain Tree is a good choice because of its drought tolerance, durability, and beauty. The yellow flowers on this tree create a “fireworks show” of bright color when blooming, and attract honeybees and butterflies. This tree loves full sun and moist well-drained soil but can grow in partial shade as well. It can get up to 30-40’ tall with a nice rounded top, making it attractive and useful for shade as well! Check them out while they are still here!

Pool season is coming faster than we wish! If you are looking to get a pool installed, I highly recommend Shaun Carder and his company Carder's Lawn and Landscaping, INC. They do 5 star work!
The Wolf River apple is great for fresh eating with its semi-crisp, juicy, sweet, and lightly tart flesh that develops more flavor in hot summers. The apples can grow to be over a pound each and are known as a 1 fruit 1 pie type. Harvest is typically mid September through October and hold in storage very well. However it is NOT self pollinating and will need a companion.
It's Spring Breezes Time! 10% off patio pavers and retaining walls all this week! 4/8-4/13
The Pound Sweet is another oldie but a goodie. Originating in Conneticut it is also called a Pumpkin Sweet. Although this apple isn’t a good fresh eating apple it is great for baking, roasting and apple butter. Harvest time is usually late September to early October. This tree is not self pollinating and would require another apple friend to bare fruit.
A shout out for Shaun Carder and his company! Looks like good things in the future.
Plant highlight of the week. Yoshino Cryptomeria
This tree is excellent for tall hedge row for sight and noise blockage.
Growing 30-40 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide. Does best in full sun and can grow up to 3 feet per year once established.
If you are looking for a deep pinkish red flowering tree look no more. The Royal Raindrops crab apple features spectacular blossoms and purple leaves reminicient of a maple. Fall color isn’t a problem for this beauty either. Featuring firery red/ orange tones and red fruit. Prefers full sun and is highly disease resistant.

Coneflowers are a great addition to any flower garden in the fall and they are native. Coneflowers bloom from mid-summer to the fall frost. Coneflowers grow rapidly and reach an end height of 2’-4’ high depending on the variety. They come in many colors and have a cone shaped center hence the name. They have a bit of a prickly stem making them deer resistant. In bloom they attract butterflies and bees and after the flowers die the seed head attracts songbirds.
Caring for coneflowers is very simple. They love heat and full sun; they require little attention once established in a flower bed or wildflower patch. They do not like to sit in wet soil and would prefer a thin layer of natural mulch. Beyond that they need very little attention.
We are closed today, have a happy and safe holiday.

Hydrangeas
Do you love the big flowerheads on hydrangeas? White, blue, pink, red, purple, even pale green! Hydrangeas can grow anywhere from 2 to 3 feet tall to 15 feet tall. They bloom from mid-spring to late summer/early fall.
How do you care for these beautiful plants? Here are some tips to a growing one of these stunning shrubs. First, the best time to plant them is in the fall. So, start thinking about it now! Most hydrangeas do not like too much sun—make them happy and plant them in a sheltered location with sunny mornings and shady afternoons, but not too close to trees, where they will have to compete for water and nutrients. They also like an abundance of organic material, so some of our total worm soil conditioner would be excellent for them. Creating a slight mound allows water to drain away.
Hydrangeas are big drinkers, so a soaker hose is a good idea—it keeps the water off the leaves and flowers yet waters the plant deeply. Mulching around them also keeps moisture in and the ground cool. Get some of our Bio-tone Starter fertilizer to give them a boost in the beginning or go with Holly-tone, specifically designed for hydrangeas and other similar shrubs.
To increase blooming, deadhead them once their flowers are over. To deadhead, start at the old bloom and check at each set of leaves going down the stem. You should see buds at the first or second set of leaves—snip the bloom off well above them.
Another interesting bit about hydrangeas is the color change some of them can go through. Did you know you could make their color change? A lower pH turns the flowers blue and adding ground limestone to increase the pH makes them turn red or pink.
Have fun making your landscaping pop!
Classic concrete pavers are the most common and have the most variety in size, color, and texture. These are the kind we carry in stock. They are strong, durable, and long lasting when installed and cared for correctly. The price points for concrete paver can vary drastically depending on the quality, color, and style you choose.
Pro’s:
• Durable
• Many options
• Easy to replace a broken paver
• Can be stronger than poured concrete
Con’s:
• Stains easily if not sealed properly
• If not installed correctly they can move around
• Colors can fade in the sun.
Concrete pavers can stain easily if not properly sealed. The good news is it’s not hard to seal them yourself. It is important to wait one year before sealing to allow any efflorescence to come out of the pavers. Otherwise, you will be left with a cloudy ugly paver. After the year mark get some efflorescence cleaner and scrub your pavers off. Then once completely dry you can apply your sealer of choice.
Considering switching to wood pellets for winter heating? Pellets are a cost effective way to heat your home with little fussing and minimal mess.
If you are trying to do the math and figure out the cost relative to other fuels Penn State has a simple and easy to use calculator. I will note that this is easiest to use with a computer and our pellets are currently $280/ton.

If you are looking for a rustic hobbit like walkway through your garden or to your home flagstone is an option. Flagstone is a natural sedimentary rock that comes in small selection of colors. We have brown, green, and lilac. There is also a reddish hue and a blue/grey hue. Flagstone can be beautiful in its natural form with raw edges but if you’d prefer a more uniform shape, you can get them cut into tile-like shapes. An important thing to remember is that while flagstone is durable enough for patios it is still a softer rock than the travertine we talked about last week. So, it will absolutely need to be sealed and cared for on a regular basis to prevent chipping of the layers. Also, if you are planning on the flagstone having raw edges in patio form you will need a strong joint compound that will work on the wide joints. We recommend the Easy Joint for that. On a simple walkway through the garden, you can simply burry them so they sit level with the ground.
Pro’s:
• Natural flagstone has an asymmetrical look with no pattern which can be helpful during the install process.
• Unlikely to shift position but even if it does like said before it’s raw edges help cover that.
• Each piece has its own range of colors within its color family so it’s not a solid block of one color.
Con’s:
• Flagstone can be expensive. Natural flagstone is usually less expensive and cut flagstone being more expensive.
• Will need sealed to keep it from chipping up layers
• Can be harder to install as the big pieces are heavy.

With heating fuel costs through the roof now is a great time to install a pellet stove for supplemental heating. The CAB 50 pellet stove I talked about a couple weeks ago is a beast of a unit and could be too much for you if you live in a smaller home. The good new is that we have the PS35 pellet stove. In the same family as the CAB 50 it’s like a little brother. Strong and reliable, just smaller.
The PS35 is in my opinion a prettier base level stove to sit in the main living area. It heats 1,500-2,000 square feet and is a little more efficient than the CAB 50. Controlled with a wired thermostat and has an auto ignition. It only has a 40lb hopper but in a smaller home it isn’t necessary to have a huge hopper.
Travertine is a natural rock that can be used as paver tiles and back splashes. It comes in a range of shades in the tan and browns. These also come in a couple different finishes. Brushed which is a matt finish. The semi polished finish is called honed and is subtle sheen to it making it look more balanced in certain applications. There is also the polished finish which offers a very shiny finish that may be too much in certain settings. Finally tumbled, this look is more natural and rustic looking that is great for outdoor use.
The pro’s:
• Adds value to your home if you ever decided to sell it.
• Durable
• Indoor and outdoor applications
• Stays cooler. Resulting in a good option for a pool deck as it won’t burn your tootsies off
Cons
• Needs sealed at the time of installation and needs resealed very 3 to 5 years.
• Harder feel to it
• Stays cool. While this is a perk in some areas it can be a downfall in others
• Because it’s a natural limestone stone it can stain and etch
To keep your travertine in good condition you should not drag heavy furniture over it because even though it’s durable it can still be scratched. You should never use bleach or acid-based cleaners on travertine because it can cause etching and staining. Hence why it’s important to seal your pavers or tile with the appropriate sealer.
